THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I also see flip up front sights as the primary sighting system –– is this just preference? Are there plans to add an optic in the future? I have two flattops, one with a fixed front sight and I use a carry handle on the rear –– this is my iron-sight setup. My other has a fixed front sight, an EoTech and a Magpul MBUS flip up rear in case the EoTech goes out. The MBUS stays in the flipped down position all the time, and is truly a BUIS –– back up iron sight only used when the primary sight (EoTech) fails. |

Mine are truly back ups. My 22 is irons only so I went with a carry handle.

I think most guys get the flip ups at first because they plan on an optic in the future. Carry handles just aren't as tacticool.
I've also got a full carry handle and a flip up rear, but since I usually run an optic, the folding rear is where I really need the practice. That, and my hooded NM A2 carry handle gives up the ghost ring for a hooded aperture, which isn't ideal for many practical purposes, while the backup flip ups still have the ghost ring and small aperture choice. So, for variable long ranges in daylight, I'd mount my 'match' A2 carry handle, but for other purposes the troys get the nod. On most rifles (including just about everything other than a low power variable set on <2x), I think fixed front sights are preferred over a flip front. |

This is how I run my lightweight AR for over a year now. The rear Magpul BUIS is just fine for me. I pound the 200yd steel all day long with it.
I have been thinking of a 1x4 in the coming future. It did start out like this.

I shoot all 5 of my AR's with flat top receivers & LMT rear sight and regular A2 front sight posts. I have a 16" 7.62x39mm, a 14.5" 5.56mm, a 12" 5.45x39mm, an 11" 5.56mm, and a lil 8.5" 6.8mm Noveske...none have optical sights. I can generally shoot 2.5" groups @ 100yds with all except the 7.62x39mm as it will only shoot 3.5" @ 100 yds.
I grew up without the benefit of scopes and just enjoy shooting the AR platform "nekid". I have been wanting a 1.5-5x or thereabout for longer ranges. I have trouble seeing targets at 300 or more yards now that I hit 50 years old. I guess it all boils down to what you will use the rifle for. I generally shoot steel plates that range from 8" for the close ones to 18"x18" plates at 300 yds. Now if you will be shooting bottle caps and fired shot shells at 100+ yds you will need a scope so you can see what you are shooting at |
