Depends on if you are buying for your own needs (current/future) or to gouge your fellow gun enthusiasts.
I buy for my own use, so I go with 10 per rifle.

IMHO ten is more than enough if you have more than that I'm not gonna say you are wrong but people act like they aren't gonna be able to reload a mag if something goes down. They just add weight if you plan on packing it somewhere when you could just bring extra boxes of ammo.

FIFY

I just bought 75 more mags last week to prepare for the inevitable market fluctuations.

It's not about reloading it's about having enough of an expendable item that may experience a ban.  And, I don;t want to get caught reloading when things are hot.  I'd certainly go more than 10...

one less than you need is "not enough"
one more than you need is "too many"

"Too many".....  What's that??? This is about half of my collection, the rest are in rifles, range bags, chest rigs, and so on... And I feel like I'm slacking.

I have around 50 mags right now.  I have one AR rifle,  1 AR pistol and another rifle build under way.   I'm not buying anymore mags anytime soon.  Most of my mags are still in the wrapper.

For an AR I want to have enough mags that I can keep 1000rds loaded and a few spares to take to the range. I try to take a rifle course every few months, and most courses are 500-1000 so I like to be able to take loaded mags and not have to worry about reloading during breaks or at the end of day 1.

So I have around 40 pmags, which is nothing compared to most of the Rambo dudes on here

Where did you get those containers? They look just right for organizing.

There are four steps of magazine stockpiling.

    1. A magazine or two - Usually what you start with. Passable, but you ought to have more.

    2. 5 magazines - Enough to not feel like you're constantly reloading at the range, and enough to see you through almost every scenario you'd realistically be in where you had to shoot at things. Also enough to shoot pretty much any 3-gun.

    3. 10 magazines - Enough for a good long blasting session at the range without reloading magazines, and the 0.1% of scenarios where you'd need to shoot more things than 5 mags will kill and can't stop to load mags.

    4. 11+ magazines - You either have a hoarding problem (not judging, just saying ), or you use 500+ rounds on your range trips and really hate loading mags on range day.

There are quite a few more steps in that 11+ range

If you don't have enough ammo to load all your mags, you have too many mags AND not enough ammo.
