Letters is to know who's mag it is, numbers is incase something becomes wrong with a particular mag, you know which one shit the bed. (Since they're all going to look the same)

I only use numbers, but it's for malfunction tracking purposes.  If a certain mag causes more than a few malfunctions, it gets tossed into the "range use only" bin.

I number mine for the following reasons:

1. Track malfunctions.
2. Account for magazines I loan out in class.
3. Identify my magazines from those belonging to another.

Take a carbine class without marked mags, then try to find them when your done running drills when there's 20 mags laying on the ground.

I number my pistol mags in order of feeding/drop-free reliability.

In a match I'll know where to place them on my belt

I thought about doing it to identify heavier grain ammo. But never got around to doing it yet.

NOS is for fags. Monster Absolute Zero or bust, poser

I mark mine so I know they're mine.
Once I have a malfunction that can be attributed to the mag, that mag doesn't get a tick Mark, it goes into my bad mag box, where at some point I'll go through and decide if I want to repair it or chuck it. They do not ever get marked as malfunctioning and then put back into rotation.

I found out about that the hard way,  we met up with some friends and did lots of shooting,  most of my Glock magazines are pretty much new,  after the day of shooting we were packing up and getting ready to leave when I noticed the 3 mags I was packing up looked like a dog was chewing on them,  they are still Glock mags but no way in the shape of mine.  I now mark mine so I know its mine
I use one of those paint pens.

I usually hit the bottom 2" of my mags with a contrasting color AlumaHyde to tell my mags at a glance.
My 6.8 mags have a different color but 6.8 stenciled in.
