The old "Sterling" brand 40 round magazines originally made for the British SA80 (Pre HK) and AR18 are the best aluminum 40 rounders I have ever used.

Found this picture of one.

The Sterling 40 round mags I have are steel, and yes they are quality.

Any current manufacturer recommendations?

ASC is the only current-manufacture aluminum one that I'm aware of. I'm personally not the biggest fan of ASC, but some people like them.

There are polymers from magpul and I believe MWG, and steel from E-Lander (Mako). If I wanted 40's, I'd try the Pmags & E-Landers; but I'm seemingly one of the only people who have had perfect success with the new version of the E-landers. Their 30's that I have, have worked flawlessly in the admittedly-limited use I've given them. Several people that I know have had very good success with the Pmag 40's, but I have no desire for 40's and have never used them msyelf.

[edit to correct. ASC is not aluminum]

You're right. I was wrong; the ASC's that I thought were aluminum are actually stainless.

Were the C-products 40's aluminum or stainless steel?  They were the only C-Products mags I ever had that would actually function.  They were great.

Edit....should have read the above post.  ASC were the same.

Are the older Bushmaster 40 rounders aluminum? I have one, somewhere, I'll check if it's steel or aluminum later today if I can find it.

Not much help but I know they exist. Someone gave me an aluminum 40 about 15 years ago. It was junk and I disposed of it, but someone made them at one time.

The c-products 40s ran for me.

The E-Lander's have worked for me.

The CMMG 40 worked.

The pMAGs . . Well . . They are pmags
