Hello guys,
Since our last thread was closed, I though I would start a new thread for everyone to give "reviews" or just leave their feedback. We really do like to hear your feedback and value your opinions. That said, Kinetic Concepts Tactical just posted a review of our mags on their blog. It can be found here... Kinetic Concepts Review It's a good review of the mags and brings up some very valid points regarding the use of coupled mags in general. So with that, I thought I would start a discussion on some of the ideal uses for coupled mags. We all love having more rounds available, but like everything in this world, there is usually a trade off. With more ammo comes more weight. So how much is enough? There are no hard rules when it comes to these questions, it always depends on the situation. But one rule that never changes is to always make sure you spend time training with whatever setup you choose to run. There is no substitute for muscle memory in a stressful situation. When we first introduced our mags with the built in coupler we were approached by some guys that were tasked with defending a diplomatic facility overseas. They said that they keep their rifles locked up in a locker room and if the need arises, they run to that room and get their rifles out of the locker. They said there is not always time to "kit" up. And they told us they loved the idea of having 2-3 mags already on the rifles in the locker so if they didn't have time to get all their kit, they at least knew they have plenty of rounds on the guns. Well, I think the same applies to us at home. In the middle of the night if you grab your AR to address a possible threat you most likely won't have time to kit up. Which is why I keep my ARs with at least 2 fully loaded coupled mags ready to go. Then when you barely have time to grab your AR, you at least know you are going to have plenty of rounds to address whatever comes your way. There are a lot of other good uses for coupled mags, but I think this scenario really hits home for most of us. It doesn't matter if it's ARs in a locker room, in the trunk of your car, or in your safe, any AR that serves as a go gun can benefit from having a coupled mag on it. |

I really like these things!
I keep three coupled in my gun whether in the rifle rack at work, in my safe at home, or strategically placed somewhere in the house. I don't notice the extra weight when shooting. They have streamlined the stuff I take to work. I can now just take my rifle (don't need the rifle bag in the patrol car with the extra mags) and my regular bag which, at the moment, has 2 more mags in a pocket. I'll probably re-work that bag's setup to hold coupled ETS mags too. My other non-work ARs are going to get their own ETS mag love soon. In fact, other officers have seen my setup and bought some too. |

I can definitely see the advantage in having 2 or 3 coupled mags hanging on your gun in your vehicle. Much less to transport or grab when needed. We have also had several LE people tell us they love being able to see the rounds for doing round counts for work. |

I just picked up a couple and find them flawless so far (low round count though). I expected nothing less due to the great feedback from other users.
I will certainly be picking more up. edit: just did. Picked up four of the coupled mags. I am not done yet. |

Will the clear plastic degrade over time? View Quote No. One of the reasons we like our material so much is it's long term properties. The plastic's resistance to UV, creep (feedlip spread), and thermal stability mean that your mag won't have problems down the road. Unlike most clear polymers such as polycarbonate, our material will not become brittle and crack over time. The testing was extensive and lasted over a year in harsh environments. Also, due to the ultra low creep, our feedlips won't spread over time when stored fully loaded. One other really nice property of our material is that it absolutely will not take on water. That means it won't swell in really humid environments or dry out and crack in super dry environments. It is an extremely stable polymer. I know that was probably more info that you asked for, but hopefully that answered your question. |

One thing that I did run into was when I had low round count in the mag, the magwell hid how many rounds I actually had.
Any chance that we will see a round count molded on the side or back and maybe a indicator on the spring? Just a thought. |

I tried out a few of the non coupled, really liked em, so I'll be back for a few of the coupled versions after the new year. I'm trying this "being responsible with money" thing around the holidays this year

Would love to see 20 rnd or 10 rnd variants come in.
Did try the mag with 300 Blck rounds - not enough to give feedback on it. Uncoupled in my short test worked fine with PWA 220 subs. I had some issues in loading of the Remington factory subs - 220g. PWA and my reloads with 175 g subs shot fine. Not enough information or trouble shoot on the issue and the mags were coupled. I did not have enough shoot time left. I blame it on the Rem rounds as I have found some withvariation in OAL on Factory rounds in the box. Or it could be just my new sbr setup. As I said in the prev. thread - I like to have many options of good mags on the market - Completion is good. It leads to best products on the market :) So far I feel good with em. |

Not necessarily something that can be engineered out but when running three magazines, when I switched to the center mag and let the bolt go forward, the top round of the left magazine would occasionally (not every time but more than once) fly out of the magazine. Other than that, I put 300+ rounds through them today running three coupled with no other issues.

Correct, the follower determines which side the top round sits on. But the mag will hold 31, so we will wait until we make new molds for a next gen before making that change. |

Just received four new mags along with the extra colored followers. They all look very well made. One question, when installing the colored followers I noted the gray ones that came installed in the mags had the rear leg clipped off.
The extra colored followers I ordered have the full unclipped rear leg. To clip or not to clip, that is the question? . |

The back leg was simply there to act as a spring guide, but the guide on the bottom piece works so well, the leg on the follower is not needed. Going forward all followers will not have the back leg. I've been beating up on some ETS mags and they are holding up well, better than most. I did at least 7 drop tests of loaded mags onto cement from about 8 feet and the mag tube held up incredibly well. No cracks to spine or feed lips where they usually fail. However, the follower inside cracked. Throwing them into a fence did nothing, so I moved on to empty mag vs SUV. After replacing the follower, the mag fed fine, but did not drop free.

Also, I have seen the follower break a couple of times from some extreme drop testing, on both cases it still fed the weapon with the cracked follower. On a side note, if you just file down that bulge with a regular file or a dremel, it will drop free again for you. The material is pretty easy to manipulate with a file. The few times I have seen a bulge like that, a few strokes of a file allowed it to drop free again. |

Translucent mags with out metal feed lips are going to be problematic... which is why magpul stopped developing theirs.. I get that these are using a proprietary plastic polymer, but at the end of the day, chemistry is chemistry and you are limited to what you can use and still be translucent...I don't see these holding up to hard use long term.

View Quote The assumptions you make on plastic are based on past technologies, which is understandable. Let's talk specifically about what has been the Achilles heel of clear plastics in the past as it relates to AR mags. Most of the limitations on clear polymers are in 2 main areas. First is high temps. Most clear plastics have a fairly low melting point, plus since you aren't able to add glass (if you want it to remain clear), there really isn't a good way to up that melting point. We tested our plastic in heat cycles up to 300F and back down to 73F 10,000 times and the material retained over 90% of it's mechanical properties. Bottom line, our plastic won't melt until over 700F, which is easily hotter than most grades of nylon (most commonly used for poly mags). If our mag fails due to heat, you have other problems to worry about because you can't store ammo at those temps. The second issue is creep. Since most clear polymers are amorphous they don't do very well when it comes to creep. As far as creep is concerned, this is one of the areas that makes our material is really special, it breaks all the normal rules of clear plastics and does very well in creep testing. We have a batch of mags that have been sitting fully loaded for over a year now and they have not spread even .001". The preconceived perception you have is for the most part right, but people need to realize that as time goes on, technology grows at an amazing pace. In 10 years from now we will have materials that blow our minds compared to what is available now. Our family of polymer is very new technology. I know there will be people out there thinking that our claims are exaggerated, or are even lies. But I assure, they are not. We have spent a ton of time and money testing and developing these magazines. We actually spent over a year and a half before our first mag was sold. We did not just make another mag and rush it to the market. We set out with very specific goals we wanted to achieve as far as durability and reliability. We have met or even exceeded all of those goals. I remember when plastic mags first came to market, even when Pmags hit the market and so many people kept saying that metal will always beat a plastic mag. Magpul proved that their mag is tougher than a GI mag in almost every way. I know it will take time, but there will come a day when people have even higher expectations as to what an AR mag is capable of surviving because our mags are the next level as far as toughness and durability is concerned. I encourage everyone out there who is on the fence about our mags to just give them a try. If you aren't satisfied, or you they don't last for you, we will take them back. All we ask is that you guys keep an open mind as far as what is possible with these mags. Because you never know when you will find your newest favorite piece of equipment. |
