THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT Waiting on Ammo to arrive to fire it. I have been looking around at Pre-Ban 30 round magazines. Bought a few used non-dated pre-ban for about 17 each I am thinking of buying some Pre-Ban 30 rnd that are New Old Stock and have date stamped. Made by Okay Industries. Ends up costing about $27 each. Do you guys think its worth extra money for the dated, NoS mags? Will they perform better etc.. I figure use dated mags at range and keep undated as a SHTF stock. Any opinions will help as Im new to the AR-15 |

In NY? You decide that as you most likely have rules about magazines. I would not pay one dime more for a older magazine in any condition compared to a brand new one.

Yes im in NY.
Just wondering if spending an extra $7-8 bucks a mag for a pre-ban mag that hasn't been used and has visible date stamp is worth added cost. Since they are basically new and have stamp I was leaning towards getting them . I wanted to see your opinions as Im still new to the ar-15 |

Well if you need a date stamped (PreBan)magazine to comply with NY laws, then sure. In other places it makes no difference at all so they all being NIW really have no more value than others made yesterday.

If it's worth it or not is up to you. None of my pre-bans have any date stamps, and I'm OK with that.
We have a New York subforum here. Swing by and say hello: http://www.ar15.com/forums/f_8/9_New_York.html |

Pre ban is pre ban. No date stamp is needed. I have hundreds of pre bans without any stamps of any kind. I wouldn't pay an extra penny for date stamps.
If you worry about that kind of thing buy a date stamp and stamp them yourself....maybe "March, 1921" That will PROVE they are pre ban. |

Not to hijack, does anybody know if pre-ban mags in MA can be 'repaired' with 'rebuild' kits?

How would anyone know that a new spring and follower was put in one of those would be the question. They would not. The magazine shell is the regulated part.

Because I have owned them since before Sept 94. But regarding other mags there is really no way of telling and since you are innocent until proven guilty it is someone else's problem. Sometimes the mags have codes on them that might help. In absence of a code there is no way to tell, so they would be legal. BTW, on a similar topic I asked for someone to show me where there has been a conviction for posessing post ban mags and no one could find one.... |

Yep. http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2011/08/phoenix_man_faces_felony_gun_c.html Granted, I don't know what the outcome was. I couldn't find any new info. But those are not charges I would want to fight in court. I'm too poor for that shit. As far as ways of telling a pre-ban mag, aside from markings, I've read here about something to do with the spot welds on the mags being able to tell the story of if it's pre-ban or post-ban. I'm not 100% sure if it's true or not, though. |

If you're talking about us-kiwi's post above.......the "rebuild kits" he speaks of, also include a new mag body. They're complete mags that the vendor will just disassemble into pieces, and ship that way. I think this is OK for places like California. But it's not in NY (no matter how much people want it to be). |
