The porus nature of the material allows chemical dying to occur.
Plastics can/do absorb moisture. Moisture changes the shape and nature of the material.
I'd be especially careful about getting chemical contaminents on these mags...it will affect their function and life....maybe not today, but perhaps next week.

ya know I did think about that but it is such a thin layer that I don't think it should bother the plastic much. I scratched the surface on one of the pmags to see how deep it soaked in and it was as deap as a layer of spraypaint is thick.

I wonder what someone from Magpul would say as it relates to the quote above.

its not like we are dying them with DEET, and I have a feeling that krylon has nastier chemicals than RIT dye

My spidey sense tells me that it applies far more to a complete color change (such as 'thru to the other side') vs just surface color and even less so to a deposit of color onto a surface.

maybe just a little residue around the edge of the older pmag on the right but the left new one is crystal clear.

Just curious:  you dipped it 30 times, 30 seconds each time?

Or a dip a second?

Ok I figured as much.  I ask because dipping all the pieces at once at 30/30 is 15 min which falls into your 20 min comment

Where did you come up with the 30/1 idea?
Link Posted: 2/26/2010 10:11:05 PM EDT
[#14]
honestly, I did the first pmag and made it far too dark. the second one I just decided to go a little slower and check the color often. I started dipping it and when I got to 30 the color looked as though if I went any further it would be darker than I wanted. so I stopped. Now one of the peices I did , I beleive the pistol grip for whatever reason took something like 24 dips and I can't tell the difference in the shades. they might be off but no more than the original fde color as they where originally off from each other in shade. I would imagine from different batches of plastic. I think that when you try it you will probably find that as you dip it you might want the shade that you get at 10 or 17 or whatever. 30 isn't the magic # it's just what I went with because thats where I stopped. it is so easy and quick that it will surprise you. have fun with it and see what you come up with. I am going to get some other colors tomorrow and see what else I can do! possibilities are endless really!.

I dont see this mentioned, but is there a problem with the dye bleeding out or staining your hands or other stuff?

nope, not when wet with water.  and it doesn't 'wash' off either such as when scrubbing with Dawn dishsoap and a sponge.

haven't tried any solvents (though, generally speaking, I don't use solvents such as Hoppes or brake cleaners on plastics)

Think I found the color I was originally looking for, did a batch of mags, CTR, and MIAD in what I would call an Urban Dark Earth (I will call it Dark Urban Earth), not that Larue did it wrong, just what my take would have been. Love this color, almost identical to DD DE rails. It's hard to photograph, but here is my best attempts

(FDE, Dark Urban Earth, Foliage, Combat Chocolate, OD Green, Black)

Die was powdered dark brown, 1/8 teaspoon in 10 cups water for a few minutes.
Base was foliage, also did a set with FDE which came out with a nice brown/coyote, will get some pics up of a comparison and some better pics of the urban earth

I tried to get green with black. Ya it sounds stupid now but I figured for 1.66 it wouldnt hurt to try. Tan is pretty scarce around here. I wonder if you can bleach to get white to start as a base color.

Did it change color in any way?

Bleach may actually weaken the material.

(pmags are molded in color)

Dyed FG PMag covers. Left one is standard Magpul FDE, next is the first Foliage Green cover I did, 3rd is the second attempt at which I decreased the dyeing time and last is the standard Foliage Green for comparison.

Behind the mags you can see an FDE MOE grip, A Duracoat Tiger Stripe Brown upper and lower receiver with Daniel Defense FDE on the ASAP plate, safety and Magpul BAD Lever.

Another pic showing the second round of dyed covers (lighter) against the Duracoated Daniel Defense Flat Dark Earth receiver extension.  Sorry for the shiny oil.  I should have removed it.  It almost matches the DD FDE perfectly.  DD FDE also matches the ASAP plate well.

Ignore the crappy looking castle nut.  That's just oil and moisture from bringing it in from the cold and setting it near the boiling dye water- not a lousy DC job.  The Castle nut and receivers are Tiger Stripe Brown Like I mentioned.

Also, ignore the FDE PMag sitting in lacquer thinner in the background.  I had painted that a dark brown many moons ago.  It needs to come off since I want to play around with dyeing the FDE stuff too.  MOE is next...

Yeah, if only I can get my DD RIS II from DD!

I got my Centurion Barrel yesterday.  12.5" with pinned block.  Gonna be nice...

Bleach won't work guys.  The reason bleach turns your clothes white is because it destroys the pigment.  Your clothes were made from cotton, which started out as white and therefore can have the pigment removed and leave the white cotton.  Black PMags are made of black polymers.  You can't remove "pigment" from a polymer.  Polymers are huge molecules and the color is part of the molecule.  I'd say it's safe to assume it takes Magpul quite awhile to get a polymer made in the right color that ALSO meets their performance requirements.  They don't start with white and throw a few colored crayons into the vat...

Would be good for them to make a white PMAG. Guys in the snow would like them and guys with rit dye could do anything with them Hmm should I make a suggestion and refer this link.

Wouldn't using a transluscent Lancer mag and white dye work? I don't know how different their material is from pmags so the results might differ (assuming it takes the dye at all) but it seems like this would be a good base for people looking to do lighter colors.

First try with the Rit Dye.. stripes could have been a bit better.. I ended up using electrical tape cut to the patterns of the tiger stripes, next time I'll have to make sure I seal it better

Think I found the match for MRE...

Close enough to start, no?

Anybody with an LWRCi MRE anodized M6 wanna give it a shot? I wanna have matching XTM panels, I just don't have the lower on hand yet to match in person, since there's some variation between batches.

I'd put a little yellow into my cocoa mixture to match that up.

Not particularly- If you sent me a FG mag, I'd have no way to know if it was right.  I could match the screen but...

Maybe you could get some paint samples from Home Depot and tell me who is an exact match to your lower and I could try.

But if it didn't work then you'd have a baby poo mag...

I would if you were willing to take the risk.  Maybe you could send me a few mag covers too for testing...

Simple.. it wasn't a black mag. It started off as an FDE mag, was dyed red then dyed black

Link Posted: 3/11/2010 9:34:39 PM EDT

Ok As you read earlier it supposedly is impossible and still appears to be.
Link Posted: 3/11/2010 9:58:46 PM EDT

Yep, the dye doesn't "stick" to the mags.  It embeds itself in the polymer.  All you'll get is dye embedded in black polymer which won't show up...
