Looking for some recommendations on hunting ammo for coyotes and such. Cant be FMJ(not legal to hunt with, not good for hunting anyways). Was looking for something like soft point or hollowpoint, etc. Recently purchased a Aero Precision OEM rifle 16" with 1in7 rate barrel. Waiting for the freefloat handguard and some other things to come in before I hit the range. Was thinking of a 62 grain or so bullet. Preferrably a good cheap or cheaper bulk round but doesn't have to be. Thanks

I've been using Speer Gold Dot 64gr JHP out of my PSA 18" rifle and 16" mid-length 1-7" for past year and I've been very happy with it's performance on hogs.
It's also very accurate in my ARs. The velocity is a little less than expected but it will kill. I've used Federal Fusion 62gr and it worked just as well.
PSA occasionally has them on sale for $11 per box and free shipping for 10 boxes.

I'd use the 64gr GD's from a 16" barrel. Cheap (.50/rd shipped from PSA), pretty accurate out of a lot of barrels, decent velocity from a 16", devastating expansion out to (probably) 300yds from a 16". What's not to like?

Everything you said is exactly what im looking for out of a bullet for this gun. Don't plan on shooting past 300 yards, most realistically will be under 150 yards.

I've always been partial to Hornady 55gr V-Max. all my 1/7 and 1/8 guns shoot it well.

Gold Dots are great, but if you can find the Federal tipped varmint 50 grain ballistic tip, it shoots super tight groups and was on sale a couple years ago for around $6.00 a box at PSA. About $9.00 elsewhere.

Australian Outback 55gr Sierra Blitzking form Sportsman's Guide is all I use on yotes and have been very happy with the results. Accuracy is superb.

What twist barrel? Most my coyote hunting has been with a 243 or 22-250, which never has an issue putting them down asap. My concern with 55 grain and lighter in 223 is not getting a perfect shot, which happens, and them running off before dying. I've heard a few people complain about the lighter bullets doing that but the heavier like 62 and up(especially 69 grain) really keeping them down on less then desirable hits. Not counting the 55 grain out just doing some research before trying.

Lighter grain, thin jacketed fast bullets are best for that type of game I thought? Heavy bullets sometimes have a long neck in tissue and wouldnt yaw or frag until they were near exiting a small animal.

55gr SP, 50-55gr VMAX, 40-50gr Varmint Grenade stuff like that is what I'd be shooting yotes with. Just my opinion. The Blitzking above would be great too. ADI is good ammo.

The current market is absolutely glutted with them.

My buddy knocked the shit out of a doe at 30 yards one season with Federal Fusion. Through the lungs and out the liver. Through and through. She dropped and kicked around a bit but died within seconds.

I then bought over 200 rounds to identify hunting and go to self defense when it was $10 a box.

I agree with this. I reload these and are very accurate. 62gr Federal fusion msr work great on deer in my experience.

55 or 60gr VMAX handloads shoot very accurately from my 1:7 barrels

....and will ruin a coyotes day

Well that's my thinking as well but have just heard of some people getting some that get up and run after initial drop. The issue isn't that they never kill, but just when they don't get a good hit, it doesn't dirt roll them as well as other do. I may still give it a whirl and see what happens.

I use CBC and IMI 77gr 5.56 mk262 type loads with great success. This past deer season shot a nice 8pt at 30yards, bang...flop.. twitch. Also shot a coyote on the run at 125-150yards or so, totally eviscerated the animal(which is the usual outcome, not a good load for saving the hide). I have shot many other deer and coyotes with these loads. Both were with my mk12 mod1 CLE Douglas 1-7" barrel.

Took it out last weekend. Shoot 5 different types of economy non FMJ ammo. 55 grains shoot 1 1/2 or so groups at 100 yards(Prvi 55gr SP, Fiocchi 55gr SP, Australian Outback(55gr Sierra Blitzking) and Prvi(69gr Match Hollow point). The Prvi 69gr Match was by far the most consistent and best group. 1/2" at a hundred yards. Hitting coke can size targets at 200 yards. This isn't a brag on me but for some budget type ammo, I was impressed for the price. This ammo should be perfect for coyote hunting.

This is what I've been using also. Busted a big male in my backyard last week, quartering towards me, bullet hit just behind near side shoulder and blew up inside him, no exit. Damn thing sloshed when I picked it up his innards were so thoroughly scrambled.

64gr Gold Dot/Fusions are my go to for 223, BUT, they are way more bullet than you need for a coyote, and will absolutely ruin a pelt. If you're keeping the pelts, use the 50gr tipped varmint mentioned above, they are super accurate, cheap, and not likely to ruin a pelt with good shot placement. (The Vmaxes and BlitzKings are similar but more expensive.)

Seen it go both ways. Seen the little bullets absolutely explode on impact and create a huge hole while the bigger bullets not and vice versa. It all seems to boil down to range when shot and of course the bullet mixed with weight. The gun I shoot seems much more accurate with heavier bullets, so for now I will go with those.
