NAMMO (Carl Gustov) makes a cartridge called Cartridge 3 AP in 5.56mm.  US Military nomenclature calls it the M995, its a 52 gr armor piercing round with a 32.2 gr tungsten core.  Maybe you've heard of it.

The Cartridge 4 AP weighs at 61.4 gr and a 38.6 gr tungsten core that has a dual bevel tip and is indexed (notched) to the aluminum sabot. It was made at the same time but only the Cartridge 3 was accepted to be the M995.  NAMMO said it was never released in Europe or the US.  They have a bunch to sell if one so needs!  All rules must apply.
(All cutaways are of the Cartridge 4)

Pretty neat, what was the velocity of them? My SLAP 7.62x51 is considerably faster then standard ball.

AP4 - 2985fps (910m/s),  M995 are 1030m/s.  (MEN DM31 at 3034fps or 925m/s for comparison)   Your SLAP (62gr tungsten projectile?) is going just over 4000.  Jackets usually strip off at around 5000
Good question to bring up.  These are kinetic energy penetrators that use high velocities in order to change the tensile strength of the armor at the impact site in order to achieve better, deeper penetration.  With your SLAP going so much faster, it would definitely achieve a deeper penetration from its extra 1000fps velocity (and twice the weight).

Funny, NAMMO kind of forgot about them too!  They where unaware of the core shape change and they thought it was just a bigger version of the M995, its big brother.  That notched base means a lot.  The projectiles tungsten core gets the correct spin, as fast as the jacket and does not slip in the aluminum sabot.  This was the MEN DM31 competitor that never took off.

They come as singles in the collecting hobby and are very expensive.

What must one do to buy 1 of those? I just want 1 for a cartridge collection, not even a box of 30. I have heard of a way to buy a small amount for collectors but forgot where I read about it.

Wow this thread still floating around!

Almost positive that nobody has this example here in the states other than me. (Ha Ha)
Its not a date thing, I have CG03 M995 (AP3) as it was a common year.  You would have to weigh the entire round to really find out, if you didn't want to pull the projectile.
None of the ballistics labs that's in contact with me has ever seen them!
Rumor was that these were suppose to come out after the M995 became established, and never did.
It was the extra cost due to the larger tungsten core is why the US didn't go with these.
