Looking to get an order of 1,000 rounds of plinking .223/5.56 ammo.  I know "best" is subjective, but I'm looking for plinking ammo that I will be happy with that will go bang each time and have fairly consistent FPS across the rounds.  Any recommendations?

Are any places getting close to $0.30/round range for the XM193 yet?

I don't have any experience with Wolf steel case. Is it fairly consistent velocity wise? I have tried a few boxes of Tula in the past and wasn't that impressed with it considering all things.

The Tula is not the same, other than the steel case.   Wolf military classic is better.

I like the new tula silver zinc coated, it's better than the old tula, for shooting rocks on hillsides it can't be beat.

Wolf Gold

1.5 MOA or better and no malfunctions is my experience in 3000 rounds.

I see a lot of positive comments for Wolf Gold, thanks for that.

I have actually found Prvi PPU 5.56 M193 PP52 for the same price as the Wolf Gold, $299.50/1000 rounds. I assume the Prvi M193 is the clear choice over the Wolf Gold at that price point?

Geco 5.56, better than the Wolf Gold or any 'cheap' brass cased ammo I've tried.
Been getting consistent 1.3MOA 10rd groups at 100 yards.
Extremely clean brass and quality, as you would expect from the Swiss manufacturer.
However, it is $0.33 per round instead of $0.30... but to me the extra cost is well worth it.

You are way over thinking this. It's plinking ammo just buy the cheapest stuff and go shoot.

I bought a bunch of the perfecta 223 at walmart. About 30 cpr and brass case so I can reload.

I have yet to try steel case stuff. Some say it's bad for the gun some say not. No idea what the truth is and since I reload I just buy brass ammo.

I have about 5000rds of Prvi M193 that I bought for plinking and I wish it was Wolf Gold instead because the Wolf Gold is more accurate. The Prvi is still great ammo but I think Wolf Gold has the edge IMO. Also I've been told that even though WG is marked as .223 it's pretty close to the specs of 5.56 M193 ammo.

I have had very good luck with ZQI from Turkey. One of the most accurate, most consistent velocity with low extreme spread numbers. .62 gr. only and no green tip but is NATO. Don't use steel cases just my preference.

EDIT

I went back and looked at Molon's thread. I was mistaken, it was ATI not ZQI that was evaluated. It is also made in Turkey at the MKE plant. So I am not sure if the two brands come off of the same production line or not. I would assume they do and would expect similar results between both brands, but cannot say for sure because I have not personally tested either brand.

P.S. Welcome to the Forums!

I know ZQI states it's ammo is tested to yield less than one minute of angle accuracy, but Molon tested some of it in his rifles and it failed the "1 MOA" test miserably.  It was some of the worst performing brass cased ammo I have ever seen him test. He was getting around 4 MOA best I can recall.

P.S. Welcome to the Forums!

Sure that was with 5.56? The ZQI SS109 is the best shooting SS109/M855 round I have came across. Its for sure not 1moa ammo but 2moa it is.

Federal M855 is all over the place with groups close to 2moa but mostly 3-4+moa IME.

ZQI has been great out to 600m for me.

Wolf Gold is better ammo, IMHO - more consistent/accurate, anyway.  If the extra 50fps is important to you, I guess PPU is a valid consideration.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the deal on GGG SS109 ammo from Cheaper Than Dirt this past Monday (3/6/17).

It was $259.00 for a 1000 rnd. case, boxed in an ammo can shipping included!

Knowing how Cheaper Than Dirt can be sometimes I thought it must be a typo, and sure enough, when I tried to order the price appeared at $389.99. When I used their interactive chat to question the error I was told to try again in an hour or so and it would be fixed. "At what price" I asked; the $259.00 with free shipping as advertised? The response said, "Yes, at $259.00."

An hour and a half later I was able to order a case at the $259.00 w/free shipping price. I told three other friends who each ordered a case but it quickly sold out after that. I never got the chance to alert everyone here before it was gone.

That's the cheapest I've seen in many, many years for new production SS109 ammo.
