I heard WG is excess M193 from Taiwanese military contracts. If it is, great. But it sounds suspicious because selling 556 to 223 owners could result in excess chamber pressure and possibly even injury and death.

What's the deal? 223 or 556?

It's Taiwanese.  It's 223 but performs close to 556

Yep. Pretty good quality .223 loaded towards the max of .223 pressures.

OK, so it flies like m193. Is the round physically different? Does it act the same when in contact with flesh?

It's basically M193, maybe a touch on the low side of a real 5.56 military load. Nominal 3200fps is what's expected, and the Wolf Gold pretty much gets there, while my IMI M193 gallops out at 3400fps or so.

During the 2005-08 surge the US Army bought 5.56 ammo from a variety of sources including Canada, Britain, Korea, and Taiwan.  Possibly Brazil.

Interesting background info:  US 5.56 domestic production

I've got quite a bit of TAA brass sold off by the Army.  It's 2008 to 2011 production IIRC.

Great ammo, very consistent and what I mainly stockpile these days.

IMHO.... as per Chopping Blocks  11.5" barrel ... it performs like M193... in other words a very yaw dependent bullet.

IMHO, there are better, more consistently expanding self defense ( Gold Dot ) bullets for not much more money.

I'm coming to learn that on this site some people's definition of "not much more" differs vastly from mine.

The very cheapest I've found for GD is PSA and that's about $10.99 a box vs Wolf Gold. That's about 40% more give or take a tad.

And if PSA stops that sale it's $20 a box for GD. Not even close at that point.

OP I stack Wolf Gold but also have a growing pile of GD (75 grain) for the serious shit.

I'm a big proponent of bonded sp ammo for HD be it Gold Dot, TBBC or Fusion. And I have a good amount for what I consider to be my needs.

Beyond that, as far as bulk ammo, 193 is what I buy and store. And Wolf Gold is an excellent 193 "lite". It's a very good value and I buy more of it than I shoot.

A couple of years ago Prvi M193 was available everywhere and often a little below the price of Wolf Gold. Another great choice if you can find it in stock.

I fully respect your comment... but ...

I hear what you are saying... but most of us "big spenders" think that extra 40% will be worth every penny if needed.

Try to look at it from our view point.... Wolf Gold 31 cents a round... 64gr GD 55 cents a round.... for a more consistently performing SD bullet.

Would that extra 24 cents, or $2.40 per 10 rounds, or $ 7.20 / 30rds  be worth it to you if you really needed it ?

Wolf Gold is a great deal, for great M193 type ammo... but M193 ammo has its flaws.

You idea of a large supply of M193 type ammo is very practical, I started that way... but in hind sight, I wish I had bought less "general" M193, and more improved performance ammo.

And that is how I have come to recommend GD type ammo over M193.

Now when I buy any M193ish ammo.... it has to be very accurate in my rifles... typical XM193 2-3+ MOA is not worth it to me.

If the M193 type ammo can produce 1.25-2 MOA... then I will consider it.

I am not trying to sound like a ammo elitist...but I have found what ammo shoots best from my rifles and prefer to stock that over less accurate ammo.

Btw, I also am a very big fan of the 75gr GD. .. IMHO it is just the further evolution of the GD line in .223.

I still wouldn't plink with GD

I can tell you Wolf Gold frags very nicely at 50 yards out of a 14.5" barrel when fired into a 1 gallon Costco rectangular milk jug of water when laid on it's side. About 10.25" long. The bullet came completely apart. At 100 yards, I found from the cannelure forward in one piece but very flat. The back half completed fragged. Bullets fired out of a 20" at 100 yards also completely fragged. Bullets fired out of a 13" barrel at 50 yards just seemed to zip through. Unscientific I know but still enlightening.

Nah I totally get you. I get what you're saying. I'm a poor plebe though so I'm only stacking Gold Dots at a 1 to 4 boxes compared to Wolf G.  Wish I could afford to stack only GD's.

I'm with ya!  Love the 75 grains too!

It's good stuff.  I was reloading TAA08 7.62 brass in my precision rifles and got 8 loadings without annealing out of them before I tossed them.  It is consistent enough to print 0.4 MOA groups all day long (yes...even used the brass to shoot my ARFCOM MOA All Day entry)....

MKE brass is another story.  That stuff shit the bed after 3x loadings and was extremely inconsistent in case weights.

This. Using a Stretch16 barrel, intermediate gas, 1:8 twist I get 1.5 MOA with Wolf Gold. It is the only bulk I buy now.
