I've got almost every weight/bullet type there is out there in my ammo supply except some m855 green tip/steel penetrator stuff.  I am thinking that I probably should have some....or just plain want some.  I have found IMI and Winchester 1,000 round cases for $350.  Which brand would you go with....and why?

Or should I just stay away from the m855 round altogether....and why?

FWIW, I have my own private shooting range so the steel core is not a problem.

I'd get the Winchester... made in America is why.

I agree with the made in America comment.

However, IMI is my go-to for military type ammunition, as in general, their stuff is top of the line and I understand sold/used for NATO military use.  I have their M193, M855 and 77 OTM mod 1.  I zero with IMI M855 since 62 grain is somewhere between the extremes.  Plus have it around in case its needed for other purposes.  All are more accurate than other OEMs mil-type I have.  I use Fed AR Xm855 as practice.  Hits the same point of aim but with larger groups.  Have not tested Winchester.

for some reason, US made M855 is less accurate than most foreign M855/SS109 loads

M855 isn't an "all that and bag of chips" round. It has less than optimal terminals, and has accuracy inconsistency. 5 MOA ammo is a norm.
SS109 is a better round but not by much. If you have a budget, look in to Gold Dot, TBBC, Fusion, or a few of the bonded rounds. If I feel the need to shoot through a car, they would be my first choices.
If you just like M855, go with IMI.

Federal or IMI would be my two choices.  Federal for "made in America", IMI if you want higher-quality ammo.

IMI...M193:  M193>M855 & IMI>Win.

Agreed, depending upon purpose.  All loaded and ready to go, I depend upon barrier blind Speer Gold Dots in 55 grain and 75 grain- depending.  And then IMI 77 OTM MOD1- again, depending (very accurate military type, maybe 1+ MOA).  And have IMI M855 also loaded- just because.  However, my IMI M855 is more like 2 MOA due to a couple shooter induced flyers, I assume, with Fed. AE XM855 ~ 3+ MOA out of a BCM 1:7, chrome lined, cold hammer forged, 16" barrel.

OP- here is a great AR15.com link in case you have not seen it.  Some of the links are broken:  http://www.ar15.com/ammo/project/Self_Defense_Ammo_FAQ/index.htm

the OP specifically said that he already has most weights and types of 5.56 and is just looking to add some M855 to the stack.

where are you getting that 5 MOA is the norm?

I keep 3 cases of IMI and LC in stock most of the time.

I thought we already knew that IMI was the best available

IMI if I had to choose.

But I don't buy 855 anymore, I don't see the point in it. M193 is generally more accurate and the higher velocity and frag potential is more important to me than that tiny little LAP pin.

Now if 855A1 was available I would change my tune.
