I prefer Federal but I'm open.  This will be stock piled, I'll be getting 2,000 rounds.  I reload so I need good brass.  Weapon is a SCAR17.  For target I'll use some match ammo.  I seen this from Cheaper than dirt for 70 CPR shipped:

 https://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/federal-lake-city-m80-308-762x-51-nato-full-metal-jacket-149-grain-2700-fps-500-round-loose-bulk-case-xm80cs-029465062538.do

What do ya think?

I have US-made 7.62 as my back stock ammo.... Winchester white box 7.62x51 and that same Federal XM80 you linked to.  Winchester brass is way nicer than Federal for reloading.  Federal XM80 should be Lake City brass, which is of course fine.  Federal XM762 is Federal brass, which I avoid for reloading anything but plinking ammo.

so you know, the XM80 is steel jacketed FMJ with copper coating. Some people worry about this sort of thing

Good point.  I need to broaden my search.  I've resisted ammo made overseas but I can see it's pretty popular here.  Still looking.

SGAmmo has it for .52/rd+ship and their shipping prices almost always beat Aim.

OP, you won't find a better deal on quality ammo. Get the PPU.

I think you'll be pleased. Good brass, copper jackets, sealant, 100% reliable, better than average accuracy ( for m80). The low price is a bonus. What's not to like?

I'm still working through my supply of Aussie and SA ball, not sure how much of that is around anymore.

I guess affordability isn't high on your list. Most folks don't have armor piercing as their #1 priority.

Prvi (PPU) works well in all of my .308 rifles. The brass is great, too.

Everytime I check this thread I end up spending another $500.  At this time I think I'm ending up with both the Prvi and American eagle OTM (1,000 rds each) as most of you suggested.

I keep a couple thousand rounds of Mk319 on hand.  Years ago I bought 1000 FN 165 grain AP bullets.  Need to get those loaded up.

I have a metric shit ton of that American Eagle M1A. I bought it when it first came out and got it for a fantastic price. It's good; not great. At today's prices 168gr Gold Medal Match is just $2 more per box and worth it.

i'm not a huge 308 guy but for a rainy day a 308 makes a great CQB rifle in a 16" package so in addition to fmj, i stocked 500 rds of mk319 and 500rds 155gr AMAX. i dont think mk319 is available anymore though, atleast i havent seen it anywhere in the past year.

if i had it to do over, it get the fusion soft points and or ppu sp's.

If you can find GGG from 03-04 thats about the best stuff you can buy. PPU, IK, and IMI are all pretty decent. Id rather get some TAP AMAX over the AE OTM stuff.

JFTR, Federal/LC M80 uses bi-metal jackets (GMCS, or Gilding Metal Clad Steel), if you care about such things.

BTW, is 2000 rounds really a stock-pile??

I like what I read about the German DAG surplus ball, MEN ammo also and has been affordable surplus. It shoots well in addition to a fragmenting jacket.

Mild steel with cupro-nickel plating. The fragmenting characteristics makes it better than reg M80 at least in the terminal ballistic category.
