Looking to stock up on cheaper ammo. I've heard wolf gold .223 is good too.

I really like Federal Lake City.  1.5-2MOA accurate and high quality at a decent (for now) price

What Molon said.

And yes, Wolf Gold is great ammo at a good price.

Geco 55gr 5.56 is the 2nd most accurate 'cheap' brass case ammo I've tried(1.3~1.4MOA 10rd group)

The most accurate 'cheap' brass case ammo is American Eagle 50gr 'Varmint Tipped' (1.1~1.25MOA 10rd group), which use to be $0.30 at Palmetto.
Unfortunately the AE 'VT' seems to be no longer cheap...

A side note, in my SR15 Mod1, SR15 Mod1 LPR, and my Colt 14.5", the Geco 5.56 is more accurate than the Geco 223.
Some members also mentioned the 5.56 being more accurate, while others says the 223.... try a few boxes then decide.

If it says XM193/M193, I buy it. It goes bang everytime and hits steel at 450 yards on point out of my noveske carbine. I have shot mixed manufacturers and it all flies the same. PPU M193, independence xm193 and federal white box m193 zero the same for me.

Still gtg.  There was an issue with a recent kaboom on some .223 American Eagle which was confused for Federal XM193

For me it is IMI anything (my go-to OEM), Geco and AE XM855.  IMI's 77 OTM MOD 1 shoots nearly as well as Black Hills blue box 223 69/75 match out of mine.  Have never tried Wolf and won't purchase any non brass ammunition.  Have not tried the other items mentioned by MOLON.

IMI, Geco, PPU, AE, in that order for me for M193

I keep IMI M193 loaded in my main rifle and the mags that go with it.  I have a few thousand rounds of it.

Wolf Gold is what I have mostly hoarded though, it's good stuff and hard to beat on price.

Ran roughly 2,300 rounds of wolf gold the other weekend with only one issue.

I had a primer get stuck in the barrel extension and bolt would not go into battery.

Popped it out and kept on plinking.

Wolf gold is good stuff and is brass not steel.
Paid like .29/per for all those.

I am hoarding and shooting mostly Wolf Gold now, as it has proved so well in mine and wife's rifles. We have a good assortment of ammo, Wolf Gold is out ''go to'' stash .

For 5.56 ammo I usually go with IMI.  I've never had an issue with any of it.  I've shot around 2 cases of M193 and around 400 rds of 77gr Razorcore.

This...I've got 3K rounds of IMI M855 in my ''rainy day" cache.  If it's good enough for the IDF, it's good enough for me.

IMI
Wolf gold

Heard some good things about geco so I may try some of that.

Define "best". Molon has a nice run down. If you want accurate, the 223 GECO is a favorite, if you want performance in the target, I lean to Wolf Gold, but most of the 193 "clones" are decent enough.
If there was never another M855 round in the history of the world, it wouldn't hurt my feelings. So there is that opinion.

As with all ammo, get some, or several and see what yours likes the best. Then decide what you want out of it. That is the one to get in almost every case.

How is Wolf Gold as far as acting like XM193 when it hits ballistic gel or flesh? Does it fragment and tumble? Also, I read that the Swiss feel fragmenting ammo is not civilized so any ammo made there, including GECO XM193 has to be manufactured not to fragment. Any info on this?

I've heard reports from multiple instructors that themselves and their students have had primers popping out of current production LC XM193 and locking up the trigger or in the cam pin path. I saw it happen last month at a Redback One class.

The only time this happens to me is when I forget to reswage or over swage the primer pockets on reloads using LC brass. As for all this NATO ammo, get it soon because it has gone from .31 a round to .40 a round in less than two months. I'm sure it will be .60 a round by November. I found a case of PPU XM93 for $319 2 weeks ago, that ammo is long gone and up to $349 now. Last year I bought two cases independence xm193 for $299 each. Lately I have been looking hard at the wolf gold .223 you guys are talking about but I am concerned of having to re-zero my optic so I wont be far off past 200m.

Interesting, I had that happen several times in one range trip with one of my Ar15's using a 1,000 rd loose-packed bulk box of Federal 193 dated within the past few years.  It seemed to happen only with that Ar15; another shot it perfectly.  I figured it might be a rifle problem, but I will have to reevaluate that.  Embarrassingly, the range trip was a while ago, and I have not yet done anything to fix it yet.  Notably, I bought some cheap non-Federal 55 gr at the range and it worked fine in the rifle that was having the problem with Federal.

I cant buy online due to where i live so  cabelas is my best option. With 5% points and a $20 off per $150 cupon it is a good deal when on sale which is most of the time now. They have IMI 193 consistently in stock at .36. AE about the same but less sales lately. Ppu .35 but never more than a handfull of boxes. I buy them all. Good stuff. Only complaint is boxes are large. Very clean. IMI has black neck seal on the outside. Smallest box though due to no dividers. Doesnt appear to affect the cases. The indy branded IMI had cleaner case necks. Best 855 is also IMI at .40.  Everything else is 5-10 cents higher. The rest of tge 855 looks good except Win has consistently sloppy and chipped green paint.  PMC is is gtg as well but normally only the .223 is affordable. Currently .35. With points discount and tax deduct 4.5 cents per round for net cost.

I like the paint on Win 855..the Lake city version looks like dog shit. IMI is better than both.
