Hy.
I got some Hirtenberger 5.56 55gn ammo, and have clear overpreassure signs. My barrel is 5.56, not .223.
Using FC 55 gn Nato or LC 55gn Nato or my local military ammo I do not have overpreassure signs.
Would be very thankfull for some comments.

There's no such thing as a "NATO" 55grn load to my knowledge, because 55gr M193 spec predates NATO adoption of the 5.56.  When NATO adopted 5.56 it was via the 62gr load which corresponds to M855.

Hirt's good stuff, and is intended for military firearms and not intended to be reloaded - so keep an eye on it, and realize your brass may be worthless for reloading.

If the military pressures worry you, discontinue using it in your problem rifle.

What kind of over-pressure signs? Any time I buy Lake City XM193 the primers look way flatter than my reloads even though the velocity is about the same.

I did. Posted it.
Discontinued the use of hirtenberger after it.
Now I wanted to try again.
Seems the hirtenberger ammo is just too hot.

Here some meassured average speeds from my rifle for comparoson
M855 3049 fps
Ball M 193 3300 fps
Hirtenberger 3453 fps

But with hirtenbergers I have extractor marks, primers our of the shells or primers with wholes in the center of the mark of the firing pin.

You must host them on a site like tinypic.com, and post the image links.

I've shot & reloaded a lot of hirtenberg ammo. Out of a 20" EMCO surplus barrel I average 3215 fps @ 12' and  I average 3197 with XM193 so it is right in the ball park. Out of a 16" Colt M4 barrel the Hirt averages 3045 fps.
Accuracy is about 1.8 moa and primers show minimal signs of pressure (minor cratering but shoulders are still rounded).

Primer flash hole has to be opened up to reload as it is small and will pull decapping pin out of some dies.

ETA: If you are having issues with blanking and primers popping - I would look at the gun for the problem- I had a new savage that would do that on light loads even and it turned out to be the weak new design FP spring. Changed to the old style and problem solved. Also 3400 fps ?? how long is your barrel?  I get 3100fps from XM855 out of the 20" bbl so something is wacky with your lot of Hirt... or mine.

The cartridge headstamp pictured above is not Hirtenberg. It is from Chartered Industries Singapore. The HB" is a letter code for the manufacturing date, "82". Hirtenberg factory code is generally "HP" for "Hirtenberg Patronenfabrik". Also, the nickeled primer and that shade of green seal are typical of Singapore 5.56...

I shoot a lot of hirtenberger .308. My PTR A3R loves it. but hands down any caliber of Hirt is always the hottest load you will find. a lot of people don't like it because its loaded to the max. Me I love it.

Well I'll be...

Thanks 1DD - I bought a couple thousand of it back in 2001 and the seller told me it was Hirtenberg, so all these years I never questioned it. Still have a couple hundred or so... Once the flash hole is reamed out the cases last for several re-loads.

Thanks

SS

Are you saying that you have a case (box) that says it is Hirtenberger Austria and the ammo in that box looks just like the picture??

Can you post pictures of the two. please?

You are not a team member, so cannot host pics on ar15.com - you'll have to use photobook or tinypic or one of the gajillion other hosting sites, and post the links embedded in IMG tags.

I see you figured it out.

Those have an "HP" headstamp, not "HB" like the top photo.

Yes. You are right . Not HB. Hirtenberger Patronenfabrik.
Hot loads. They give me a lot of trouble.
I was thinking on disassamble the bullets and make nicer reloads using the components.
I have noticed tje overpreassure signs are severe in my 20" 1/8 barrel, where the primer popps out of the shell, or even small perforation on the place hit by the firing pin. All have marks  at the extraction if the extraction is successfull and the gun does not jam because if the extruded primer. On my 16" 1/9 barrel the ammo works good but the overoreassure signs are there.
I wonder if you had some similar experience with hortenbergers.

Thanks
