So i have slowly collected several thousand rounds of PMC XTAC .62 grn green tip over the years and i now find myself asking what to do with it.  I cant shoot it at any local ranges, i cant hunt with it, not sure of its performance in a defensive manner so not sure if its suitable for a SHTF situation.  What do you guys think about it.  Should i just use it for plinking or keep it for the end of the world.

The purpose of m855 is to penetrate steel helmets and flak jackets at 600m. Thats about all it does well.

For shtf anything that is reliable in your gun will do. Buy it cheap stack it deep.

I like the fact that they are green.

It's got a steel penetrator in the core. This is the round you would want to go to if you needed to penetrate through light cover to hit your target, such as a car door or a k-pot etc.

The M855 only penetrates better than the M193 beyond 200m. Inside that range, the M193 will out penetrate the M855 due to its velocity. IMHO either will be fine to stock up on as it's better have something vs nothing.

So the consensus is stock pile it for when ze germans come.  Just out of curiosity what is the go to stockpile ammo for defensive purposes?  Any brand i should look for.  I prefer the heavier bullets.

80s vintage Soviet steel helmets and (titanium IIRC) body armor to be precise.

What's your barrel twist rates and threat environment?

My personal experience with the reasonabley priced bulk ammo is that the current 62 grain steel core penetrator is more accurate than the 55 grain offerings.

Lake City is hotter than the PMC 62 grain, but the PMC is more accurate.  My theory is this is due to less bullet upset from the PMC's lower velocity.

So, if you like making smaller groups with your bulk ammo the green tip is useful for that.

At the current moment my only 5.56 rifle is an 11.5 inch BCM with 1:7 twist.  My expected threat would be strictly human

The question is where the humans might be.  Do you need penetration into vehicles or through other barriers?  Just a question of whether you need a barrier penetrating load or one more optimized for terminal effects without barriers.

It is a cheap good quality control built ammo. For a few cents more per round I will take it over Wolf

My one AR likes it better than 55gr. stuff.

Its more expensive and fragments less reliably than m193, basically its an out dated poor performer.

If you want a good defensive round pick a barrier blind SP or heavy OTM. If you want good NATO pressure brass cased practice ammo while still being a decent for defensive purposes round get M193. If you want over priced poor performing ammo pick M855.
