Anyone know the differences? Quick search said that the msr has a different primer than the regular fusion. Does that mean the regular fusion is unsafe for use with free floating firing pin like on the AR? Local dealer has the regular fusion in stock I was thinking of trying a box or two for home defense / deer or coyote this year.

I believe MSR has crimped-in primers. Beyond that, I'm not sure.

Do a search. lots of good info posted many times. BTW, velocities are about the same, the confusion stems from the ammo box data which has different test barrel lengths (16" vs 20'?) but people seem to miss that.

The MSR is actually superior to the plain fusion, especially for auto loading rifles.  They both use the exact same bullet, however, the velocity is actually higher, albeit only slightly, with the MSR.  The MSR also has better annealed brass and actually sealed primers.

Been my experience, although not much, the MSR gives higher than advertised velocity in my rifle, RRA Mid 16" Hvy 1:8.  Chrono avg 2808 fps.

This guy nailed it.  Its a great little round, ive got it to shoot about 1.5 moa which is more than enough for hunting or SD.
