I seem to keep a variety of hand - everything from steel 55/62gr fmj and hp to brass 223 and 556 55/62gr fmj/green tip.

Different uppers perform better with certain ammo.  for ex, my psa upper loves xm855, my spikes upper loves pmc 223 bronze, and my bcm upper LOVES 62gr silver bear

do you keep a variety on hand or just buy/stack one specific type of ammo?

just curious - thx

Federal M855 green tip in a nice ammo can. Cheap and good quality. I prefer the 62grain because it's what I use in the Army and it seems pretty reliable and accurate. But it depends on your barrel. 1/9 will shoot lighter loads better. My colt is a 1/7 and likes the heavier rounds better (accuracy). I have never had a problem with ammo jamming up any AR that I have owned.

I do have a few boxes a Winchester split grain hollow points for home defense and a few random boxes of hunting rounds for different animals 60-77g.

I will re-zero with whatever I am going to use for hunting at either 25 meters or 100 meters, depending on where I will be hunting, though out here in AZ, I am using my .308 way more due to range.

I would say get a good quality FMJ to enjoy shooting and a few boxes for either hunting and home defense (what is good for killing a deer should be good for killing a criminal). A carbine is a great home defense tool. Accurate and not much longer than a pistol with your arms fully extended, but much better firepower. Just like any firearm, you need to know what is behind your target. Anything will penetrate walls.

Right.  I buy both PMC M193 and IMI M193 for the range.  I have used Silver Bear and some Wolf Gold.

I have a decent supply of SS109 62gr. green tip, 77gr. OTM IMI Razor Core and both Nosler and Winchester 64gr. bonded solid base SP.  All for HD/SD/SHTF.

I wish I lived in Alaska...The wife wont even think about it though :(

I also stock up on whatever I can, just because I don't have a big budget and have to save to buy anything. Hell took me almost two years to build my 20" AR. But mostly I have 55 grain LC 5.56 some 55 grain WCC 5.56 whatever that is, a few PMC 5.56 some Remington .223 and Silver Bear 62 grain SP .223.

1100 +/- XM193 for SHTF
1000 +/- AE223 55gr FMJ for 3 gun, targets inside 100 yards
200 +/- home rolled 77gr SMKs  and 75gr horn BTHP match, components for 500-1000 more. for 3 gun, beyond 100 yards
100 +/- each of TAP 75gr T2 NATO and BH MK262. The TAP in mags ready to go.
400 +/- mis of 68 & 69gr match, varmint rounds, larger game rounds and a few hundred of other boxes from testing my barrels.

I buy when i see a good deal on any of the above, mostly the top two. I am getting low, lol. Once i see 1000 round under $300 shipped, i am fo'ing. Maybe 2.

M855 for everything since I don't hunt. I know its poi/ poa since its all I've ever trained with.

I'll second that. I shoot hand loads because they are cheaper but the stash is M855. I know it and it works in my rifle.

I'm downsizing and giving the kids most of the firearms and the dozens of varieties of ammunition to go along with them. Now they can experiment and play around and decide what loads they like best...

Variety

PMC M855 Green Tip
Federal XM193
Wolf Gold .223
Freedom Munitions reman .223

I like shooting the wolf gold most (most accurate) XM193 is probably my least favorite to shoot, but I keep it around for it's proven terminal ballistics. I stock up on the FM stuff when they have free or $5 shipping promos

For my HD mags I keep those loaded with 5.56 TBBC.  And that's what my HD rifle is zeroed with.

Other than that the bulk is LC and Prvi M193.

Goodly amount of 855 on hand too.

And I don't even know how much of everything from 40 gr V - Max to 77 gr SMK. Lots of different loads and brands.

Probably a couple thousand rounds of various stuff that I'll just shoot a mag of every now and then.

I love Fiocchi 40 and 50 gr V-Max. Fun stuff!

I have accumulated various type of 5.56 in the last year.
* Federal XM193 (?) 55gr FMJ, from when I had to buy 3 boxes at a time
* Winchester 55gr fmj from gun show
* Fiocchi 50gr Amax (very accurate in 1:9 barrel.

Though nobody beats Jerry Michulek.  Look at the wall behind him at the end of this video, around 16:35.

I stock pile whatever I can afford at the time and place.  Have cans full of M193/M855, and smaller amounts of Mk262 OTM and couple hundard 55gr JSPs.  For less serious range use I reload whatever 55gr FMJ/62gr FMJs and powder I can get.

Few thousand XM193. Few thousand XM855. Few thousand Federal .223 55 grain FMJ when I find it cheap. Few hundred Speer Gold Dot for go-to magazines.

I like Federal/Speer and all of my rifle, shotgun and handgun ammo comes from them.

POI's change with different ammo. I found this out during a carbine class, and had to adjust my sights on the fly. Not something I really wanted to deal with while trying to learn more important things.

I stocked XM193, but used Fiocchi 55 gr. FMJ. Now I'll have to re-zero it for the XM193.

Just because it's the same bullet design and weight doesn't mean it's going to shoot the same. Invest in one type of ammo for your "serious business" rifle that you carry and train with, and stick with it.

You bring up a valid observation when it comes to stocking multiple brands and weights of 223/556 ammunition .

I typically zero with my go to ammo leave the sights alone and practice with the other ammo.

For my reloads, I typically use the same rifle with corresponding load. My SPR always gets the 77gr load.

For those who choose multiple rounds, do you load a certain way (5 rounds of a barrier perpetrator, 5 rounds of an "open air" round) or carry a full mag of each?

Personally I just have Federal LC M855 rounds. I want to find a better "all-purpose" round for a 11.5" SBR when I build it.

I generally try to stick with Federal XM193. My rifle is zeroed with that so thats what I buy. Ill grab some Fed M855 if I see a good deal too. POI is different but close enough if I ever really needed it.

Try and standardize a round per caliber, then branch off in small numbers just to experiment and play.

I have a hodge podge of brands, .223 and 5.56.  I was buying whatever I could find in 2013.  A couple hundred rounds of this, a couple hundred rounds of that.  Privi, Independence, UMC, Lake City, Fiocchi, American Eagle, and some Norinco I bought many years ago. All 55gr FMJ.

I really need to shoot some of that stuff up and stick with one brand for consistency.

I was in the same boat as you, I took a couple of classes and shot everything up now I only have wolf gold for my everyday plinking ammo and LC m193 and m855 in my shtf pile.  I'm really considering shooting up the M193 and running wolf gold from here on out cause the wolf gold is more accurate and thats what I zero my optics with.

I keep purpose specific on hand: My SPR I keep Hornady Tap 75gr 556 (1200 rds), several CQB and all purpose rifles M855 (3000+rds) and a 300blk shorty subsonic for HD (1500 rds) Handguns pretty much same sinerio.

I'm trying to standardize on m193 so my m855 is being used at the range.  SD is going to be a Fusion Gold Dot since it will be easy to replace going forward.  I however have a bunch of TSX loaded in mags

It is better to have practiced with thousands of rounds and carry a hundred than to be an ammo bunker curator.

I keep a bandoleer with several magazines loaded with 75gr Hornady TAP.  My rifle is zeroed to this and it is changed out every year or so.  The bulk of my ammo and the largest expense is 55gr practice ammo.  Interestingly, If you hand-load a 55gr bullet to the minimum charge the trajectory and zero is close to the heavier SHTF stuff for at least a couple hundred yards.  When it is time to replenish your good stuff you can use it up by practicing long range engagements.

M855 is not very accurate and you cannot shoot steel with it.  Just because it is military doesn't mean it is the best.  Any AR-15 bullet will penetrate anything the M855 can.  M855 isn't armor piercing.

Silver State Armory loads a 77gr SMK OTM they call an MK262 clone.  I just Cronographed a fresh batch of it in an 18" bbl and was disappointed to find it is only flying at 2600fps.  It shot about  a 1.5" MOA(3"group at 200yds).  The TAP ammo is closer to 2700fps.

If it ever gets to the point were you might have to actually shoot 1000 rounds of SHTF ammo in combat you probably won't live longer than your ammo supply.
