I've shot 300+ rounds of their 9mm defensive ammo which claims to be exceedingly accurate with fantastic terminal ballistics. I found one of these two claims to be true. The terminal performance of these rounds proved substantial on small varmint and game in the area, blowing out some small fist sized holes on the far side of the animal. The accuracy, however, was flakey at best with flyers every couple rounds. After watching several videos of the 5.56/223 version of the DRT ammo, I became re-interested in the "penetrating frangible" rounds for a medium distance hunting round and potential home defense rounds.

Has anyone had any experience with these rounds? Pros and cons of these rounds through common barriers: drywall, auto glass, and flesh media. Competition for this round in home defense would be the Hornady TAP rounds or Winchester low flash home defense rounds.

You may need to do some digging on these.  DRT took over for Powell River.  Dr. Roberts once said the PRL 87gr 223 was good for non-barrier shots but the 79 was not so hot.  Don't remember where he said that.  Exotic Ammo FAQ says

"CASE STUDY - DRT TerminalShock FMHP 79gr

The manufacturer claims that: "DRT™ lead free centerfire ammunition is designed to out-perform all other ammunition, whether related to accuracy, reliability or terminal ballistics and it is environmentally friendly."

Doctor Roberts has tested this ammunition, and has the following information: "There has been much speculation about the new DRT projectiles. As noted in previous threads, DRT (http://www.drtammo.com) appears to be producing the same type of powdered metal projectiles previously made by Powell River Labs and used by some U.S. units in the late 1990's. The PRL 5.56 mm and 7.62x51 mm rounds offered superb accuracy and terminal performance, however PRL had some production and QC difficulties. Dr. Fackler presented a paper in the IWBA Journal discussing the 5.56 mm 76 gr PRL tungsten-tin core rifle projectiles: Fackler, ML: "Tungsten Frangible Bullet Wounds in Pig: Exam by Autopsy and X-Ray". Wound Ballistic Review (4)3:33-34 Spring 2000. We independently tested the 61 and 87 gr versions of the PRL bullet at the CHP Academy in late 1999 and had similar results. Ironically, the PRL/DRT bullets are true "Blended Metal" projectiles..."

May want to read Dr. Facklers paper on the subject if you are really interested in this type of ammo.

Here is a pic of the 87 grain hvy match, tungsten/ tin bismuth powdered core from Powell River.  The newer DRT rounds use a compressed powdered copper/ tin matrix.  The tungsten is heavier and is much better.  I was contacted thru outside sources by a Navy seal who says they still use the tungsten/ tin version.  Not available to civilians.   Sorry about pic quality, these were some of my first, 7 years ago.  wolfgang
