Can someone please help me with a few ammo questions.

#1 What is the difference between the XM855 and the SS109? Are they both steel core bullets?
#2 What is the difference between the XM193 and a standard FMJ round.
#3 What does the "ball" in ball ammo mean?
#4 Is Lake City XM855 and Winchester XM855 the same ammo just different manufacture?

Thanks In Advance

1 - SS109 is the NATO designation for the bullet that is loaded in US M855 ammo.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M855

2 - M193 is a 55 grn "ball" military load in 5.56x45mm.  .223" Remington ammo is designed for a shorter throated chamber than the 5.56x45mm chamber.

3 - "ball" ammo is simply a standard bullet.  No tracer, no incendiary, no special armor piercing properties (except M855 ball, which has an armor piercing design)

4 - I will leave to the experts.

You really ought to give this a read:
The Ammo Oracle

2.     "55gr FMJBT" is not the same as M193 55gr FMJBTs for terminal performance.  M193 will fragment while "55gr FMJBT" may or may not to varying degrees based on manufacture.
