Not aware that any brass cases were ever produced for this cartridge.
Even the recent Hornady offering is a steel case. http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=4&f=54&t=135686 |

No brass cases have ever been produced for this cartridge. The relatively few in existence are custom formed from mainly .222 Rem brass.
Forming 5.45x39 from .222 brass is nearly a boondoggle, though fun to do if only to confuse other shooters at the range and to prove that you can (should the 5.45 supply ever dry up). Alternately, surplus 5.56 tracer can be sized down to get nearly the same bullet length and most 5.45 guns shoot surprisingly well with them. |

Igman in the former Yugoslavia made brass cased 5.45, at least experimentally or on a trial basis. Some folks beat on their door about making it in quantity for the US market and got the reply that someone would have to place a substancial order for it for them to tool up a production run. Several million rounds if memory serves me correct. Not enough demand and reloaders out there to make this a viable option IMHO.
PINDAD in Indonesia also made brass cases in 5.45, also experimentally, and for an unknown customer or reason. Those are very rare collector's items... Reforming brass to make 5.45 is not a huge deal, but not really gaining you anything either. If you are looking for performance out of this caliber, it's the projectile and powder that can be easily manipulated... Loading the existing primed steel case with a premium or match bullet with a more uniform powder charge will yield good results. 1DD |

I wonder where it comes from, same as the "made brass for special shooting teams/some bad ass army groups" etc |

I've spoken with a German collector who has a brass cased 5.45x39mm made by PPU, not Igman as I had originally posted. My bad.
Known brass cased 5.45: PINDAD, in Indonesia Tula, with a S&B headstamp, but never delivered to Czechs. Uzbekistan, made on Manurhin machinery PPU Interestingly enough, all BOXER primed! A South African collector also reports a brass cased 5.45 made by Bertram Bullets in Australia. 1DD |

Go to cartridgecollectors.org and look in the discussion forum under the brass cased 5.45x39mm thread. There are pics of the PINDAD and Uzbek rounds and one with no headstamp.

I am currently in correspondence with PPU to try to get them to produce a brass-cased match 5.45x39mm round.
If you want a really accurate barrel for shooting 5.45, then look to Ballistic Advantage. You can read about one of their barrels in this article I wrote for Defense Review: http://www.defensereview.com/ballistic-advantage-delivers-a-5-45x39mm-russian-recce-riflecarbine-tactical-ar-for-combat-accurate-shooting-at-low-ammo-cost/ |
