New to the AR family and not finding the info that i am looking for . I just bought a Rock River elite comp , There are so many different types of ammo . Steel case witch i have allready heard not to run that through my RR . Then theres FMJ ammo , is this ok it appears to be brass ? Right now i have Black hills 68 grain to shoot with iron sights and 55 grain for shooting with my BDC scope . Why do scopes that have the BDC are only for 55 grain bullets or am i missing something ? I want to do some target and hunting with this AR . Thanx for any tips and info , and sorry about all the questions right off the bat .

your two ammo choices are fine. If you are a new shooter, is it possible your accuracy isn't at the point where you will bae able to tell that the heavy bullet isn't "on" with the BDC? And the difference really becomes more obvious past 250 yards. How far you shootin? just a thought...
Sure, you can have them all. One round at a time.

Don't over think it too much, it's a simple weapons system.

I just saw that at the top , and have been reading . I went from shooting a .270 and shoot hornady balistic tips out to 400 yrds was the furthest i was able to shoot . Then i made the mistake of shooting a bow and sold the .270 , and hunted and got into competitive archery and now shoot for PSE and on their staff . Then i made the mistake in shooting my buddies AR , and that brings me here .

The only thing i didnt see is what grain bullet do they recomend for hunting , I am thinking as long as its a hollow point or a soft point , it will open up enuff to do damage . Watched some shots in ballistic gell and was really surprised by the damage once it got passed 3 inches . This was on youtube . Thanx again everyone for the tips

Most .223 hollow points (true hollow points, not OTM) are varmint bullets, suited for ground hogs, coyotes and such. For hogs or whitetails a good SP, like Federal Fusion or a Hornady TSX (all copper) are the best choices. Not that tons of such critters haven't been taken with 55gr fmj, but those are better choices for hunting game.
