Just picked up 300 rounds for $70 at my local "The Academy" sports store. This is the only steel they stock. Is this like wolf ammo?

Monarch is the "house brand" of Academy Sports. Their steel cased (Monarch Steel) ammunition is made by Barnaul (as far as I've been able to tell, all of it is, pistol or rifle), and their brass cased (Monarch Brass) ammo is made by Prvi.

Monarch Steel is NOT like the bad old Wolf; Barnaul's steel cased .223 is a lot hotter than the old Wolf black box, and I've run thousands of rounds downrange without a single issue.

NOT Canadian, NOT Serbian, it's a US brand that belongs to Academy Sports. Academy also has the "Magellan" and "Austin" brands of clothing...

It stinks and it is filthy, but I ran 2K of that stuff through an 11.5" upper last year with zero problems. I'll buy another few cases of it if it ever comes down lower than Aim's price on WPA, which my little gun likes just as well.

I've always been against using the wolf and monarch stuff in anything other than Russian type military weapons. It's extremely dirty and the primers usually have this red lacquer type coating that flakes all over everything. However I seems many AR owners use I for their plinking. Is it harmful or troublesome to use other than all the cleaning you have to do?

Is this cheap ammo accurate out to about 75 yards with 2" groups? I'm thinking of using this an a RRA I have

You haven't looked at this stuff: primer sealant is there, but it's not the thick, flaky stuff you're thinking of. ALL .223 ammo is dirty, some more than others, but the stuff Barnaul makes (Monarch Steel and apparently the new WPA stuff) is on a par with my experience with Winchester white box in the soot and crud department, and it has never failed to get in the black if I do my part. 50 and 100 yards ranges aren't a problem-I typically get easily 3-4" groups with slow aimed fire supported with my elbows on the bench, and a lot better than that off a rest. That's with iron sights, by the way...

Why are you "against" using steel cased ammunition in anything other than Russian style weapons?

The steel cased ammo is significantly cheaper, not always as fast, but it has the annoying habit of going bang every time I pull the trigger and it is in the chamber.

It is perfect linking ammo and you don't have to fret about losing brass at a public range.

Big deal if there is a little red stain on the bolt face, Privi does the same thing with their ammo and NOBODY bitches about that.

I've been able to get a ten shot group to about 2.5 inches with Monarch, or maybe Wolf, I honestly don't remember. I was using a stock 20in Bushmaster with a cheap 2-7x32.

I have used it in my AR with no problems.

Ive used 40 ammo in my Glock 23 and had problems with every mag change.

Monarch steel case ammo = Barnaul. This is covered in the ammo review and ammo FAQs
