55gr works well as an all-around load.
75gr and 77gr loads work best for people but are expensive to plink with. |

I like xm193 in the brown or black box it seems to be the same thing. Never given me a problem and it has good accuracy.

I also have a Les Baer Super Varmint AR with a 20" heavy barrel. So far I've only shot the same 55gr in it. The Les Baer is great for longer ranges 100 yds+ (heavy with a bipod) while the M4 doesn't get pushed much past 100 yds. It would be nice if the same rounds would be suitable for both the Les Baer and the Colt. |

Federal gold medal 77 grain match ammo. it is awesome out of the 1in7 twist the colt barrel has.

The best all around ammo for the Colt 20" 1/7 IMHO is full-power 5.56 M193, like the Fed XM193, WIN/IMI Q3131A, or the PRVI M193. Stay away from the lesser .223 stuff, like Rem, PMC, Wolf, Aguila, Centurian, etc., which in my view is a waste of $.
For specialty situations, hunting and long range shooting, the 75/77 OTM rounds by Hornady, Cor-Bon and Black Hills are all primo and the 1/7 will stabilize them all nicely at longer distances like 200 and 300-yards. My two favs for my Colt Sporter II HBAR are Cor-Bon 69-gr SMK and 77-gr SMK, both of which are hotter 5.56mm loads. The Cor-Bon 69-gr SMK is also very accurate thru my two Bushies' 1/9 twist barrels (16 and 20 tubes) too, but they won't stabilize any of the heavier projectiles. |

What would you think of a 75 grain HP out of a 1/9 twist for home defense? I have an AR at each end of the home and I know that the tan PMAGs have the defensive ammo in them. Thanks in advance, Walsh p.s. We had a police shooting here in Charlotte last week. 4 officers returned fire and the man had a vest on. After hearing that I'm thinking every third or 4th rd should be a green tip. Any thoughts on that appreciated. |

XM193 is cheaper than the rest and about as good in the accuracy and terminal ballistics department. Don't sweat bad guys in vests,any load you named will shoot through both sides of a standard concealable vest and keep going,green tips not needed. I wear one everyday and am quite aware of their limitations!
I load all M193 in all my rifles,my PD carries 64 gr PPs. They both do a fine job. TJR |

The best thing to do is get different types of brands and test in in YOUR Colt. Every gun is different. See what works in yours. Use it. All of the above has stopped or killed hundreds of thousands or millions. You do your part and it will perform.
