Our action isn't a conventional blowback,  its our all new Radial Delayed Blowback.  We began work on this project 2 years ago.  We started with a basic blowback, then went to DI and then visited piston.  Based on our testing and performance parameters, we weren't able to get function they way we wanted.  The Radial Delayed Blowback solved all the issues we ran into with the other actions. 

Our Guard 45 will be out in the wild soon, we have already sold our first production run.  We have more going to gun writers this week.  There should be quite a bit of info out in the next 45 days.

I'll bite....what is Radial Delayed Blowback?

The RDB is actually pretty simple, we added a chamfer to the back of
the locking lugs and adjusted the cam pin path to create a suitable
delay for pistol calibers. When the bolt group is closed, the bolt is not truly locked like a DI bolt.

When a round is fired, the bolt pushes directly against the carrier creating initial reward travel. This initial action
between the bolt and carrier prevents the cam pin from bearing the brunt
of recoil. As the the bolt rotates and moves back, the cam pin travels its path
within the carrier to complete the delay. Once the cam pin reaches the
end of the path, the bolt and carrier are fully expanded. This provides
sufficient delay to allow for the pressure to drop to a safe level for
cycling.  Once fully
extended, the bolt and carrier group move to the rearmost position,
ejecting the spent case and resetting the hammer.

Since the bolt doesn't truly lock we added a dummy carrier key so it wouldn't
be able to be stuck into a 556 rifle inadvertently.  This system runs a
standard H buffer. Recoil is less than that of a blowback 9mm.



How does it compare to DI?
In terms a of recoil  RDB is very similar to DI.  RDB has very little
reciprocating mass, as a result, recoil is very very light.  In our
testing we ran into two main issues with DI.  First was velocity loss. 
If memory serves, we lost 150fps+ with DI do to the large amount of
being diverted to cycle the rifle. 

The 2nd was endurance between cleanings.  At best we could get several hundred rounds thru DI
before it would seize up from carbon and metal bits.  The excessive size
of the gas port and its proximity to the chamber blew all kinds of crud
into the action.  Our goal going into this project was 2500rds minimum
between cleanings.  We never got close, so we abandoned DI, our RDB
sailed thru and kept going.

How does it compare to blowback?

Blowback was the first action we tried.   The 45 required weight, lots and lots
of weight.  The gun was heavy and the recoil was horrendous, we scrapped
that action really quickly. 

Are there ammo/chamber pressure envelopes which require hot or cold ammo? 

RDB works at both ends of the
spectrum. We are going to sell a weight kit. It will consist of a 1oz,
2oz and 3.5oz weights.  People like to tune and tinker. This changes up
the way the rifle shoots with +P and suppressors.

Thanks! We are super excited about this project.  The 45 was definitely one of
the more time consuming projects we have taken on.  Hats off to our
engineers, we gave them some pretty tough parameters to meet.  They hit
it out of the park :D

Frankly,  I think CMMG is the most innovative AR company out there.

Now... if I could just convince CMMG to make a mid-sized .223 / 5.56 AR action ( Between the .308 and .223 ) that would allow 80gr .224 bullets to be seated out to 2.550, and still be magazine fed...

It could really shine with a .22 Nosler.... Lol

We have only tested with our lower.  The carrier is a standard 556 (with exception of cam pin path) and the bolt and extension are standard 556 in size.  I am sure it would be possible for our upper to be adapted to a different mag set up, we just haven't tried it.

Runs great suppressed. If you search cmmg guard on youtube, there are several reveiws that have been posted. A couple of them go into detail about how it runs suppressed.

We haven't done a FA version yet. I suspect we will have one in the next couple weeks. NRA show had us pretty busy lately.

45 ACP for standard lowers

The higer capacity mags in the pics above are SGM I believe.  They are around 25 rounds and seem to work well.

Rifle and pistols are scheduled to begin shipping out on Tuesday.  Here is short vid near the end of our first day of endurance testing.  This video was taken about the 7000 round mark.

CMMG Guard 45s shipping today...

With the release of our 45acp, its time to switch gears and begin adapting to other calibers. I sure like when the first day of testing begins like this.Care to guess the caliber??

I'd argue the point on 45 blowback.....as I have several....blowback 45 done right is no more unpleasant than a 9mm to shoot.....I can hold a full 25 round mag dump into a paper plate at 25 yards with no trouble in full auto......smaller group with DI and as far as issues with DI...I personally have fired tens of thousands of rounds through mine.....often 500 rounds in a session and 1500 to 2000 on more than one occasion over the space of several days....... which is much more difficult than doing it in one session in my opinion.  I look forward to playing with a guard.....but 10 years of building DI and a couple now with blowback have proved both as viable systems to me. In fact the original prototype DI 45 I built years ago is still running after 42,000 rounds

It's all relative...I have a customer with a prototype 357 sig that loves to shoot it...I find it to be downright unpleasant............LOL....fortunately with new products it just gives the consumer more choices and keeps those of us making them searching for new innovations to make our offerings better.
With the number of gun owners/shooters in this country...I don't think any of us are gonna starve......

While I can't go into specifics or timelines, I will say we are currenly adapting 7 additional calibers.  PCC ethusiasts are going to love what we have coming out.
