If your going suppressed, check with suppressor manufacturer to see what the shortest length they will still warranty their can.

8.5" barrel will allow you to use a 7" rail:

Thanks. 8.5 will allow you more handguard options, if you want the barrel threads outside the handguard. 8.5" ar9 barrel is more like 7.5 or 8" 556 barrel in lenght. I found this out the hard way.
