Does anyone make a vise block for a colt 9mm lower receiver?  How are you guys holding the lower when installing the buffer tube?

Use an old Glock mag or a piece of wood, or a combination of both?

Buy a promag magazine for it. Thats about all they are good for.

I just cut one out of a scrap piece of wood. But I have access to some woodworking equipment.

It doesn't have to be all that fancy. You can get by without cutting a mag catch slot.

Match the length/width of a magazine; round off the edges with sandpaper; test fit into magwell; sand it down as necessary.

If you want one that allows you to manipulate the action you will need a mag catch slot to keep the bolt from running into the top of your block.

After all that next time I'm just using a magazine. Why pay $35 for a mag block when they are on sale at PSA for $12.99?

Thanks.  The vise block that Bergy24 linked above is exactly what I was looking for but I may just buy a cheap mag from PSA and try filling it with epoxy or something to make it more rigid.

I just pad the lower and hold it in a vise.  You're not going to need to really crank on it...

Otherwise, a chunk of wood or a cheap (even "sacrificial") magazine would be an easy choice.

I'm not sure you have to fill a spare mag up with epoxy. Maybe for long term multiple uses.

Before I built the wood block I did wrap tape a couple of times around a mag and use it to hold the lower receiver while I was installing the LPK.

I didn't do any extensive wrenching on it.

It didn't seem to do any damage; the mag worked fine afterward.

Of course if you are going to fill it with epoxy you've already written it off anyway.

Again, at $12.95 not much of loss.

We are hopefully at least 4 years away from a time when we have to start hoarding high-cap magazines again.

Has anyone ordered one of these vice blocks?  How did it work??

I slapped on a spare grip, padded it up in the vise, and tighten down to where it needed to be and swapped it back to the grip you'll be using permanently.

When I needed a hammer block when building my 5.56 AR I just went to Harbor Freight and got a cheap cutting board (made of a somewhat forgiving plastic) and cut 3 or 4 L shaped pieces and glued them together with superglue.  Then cut with a coping saw/dremel tool, and small belt sander to fit the mag well.  I then cut a small mag release slot and a curve to go over the bolt release with the dremel,

Kind of like what this one: (But it could have been made a little longer so that it works as both a hammer block and a vise block)

If I can figure out how to post pics that don't need a url I'll put them here... but for now imagine the brownells' tool out of white cutting board (four pieces thick cut to work as a hammer block.  Probably would work as a magazine well block as well.

I've installed many buffer tubes and never used a vice block; I just clamp the lower directly in my vice.  I have some plastic vice jaws with magnets that stick to my vice, I think I got them off Amazon, they work great.

I just ran one of these cheapies thru the tablesaw up to the angle.  It came in very handy with a few broken bolt catches..but those days have passed.
