Was thinking about this a couple of days ago.  A lot of people build up match grade 10/22s that can really drive nails with good ammo.  Are there are any dedicated 22lr uppers that are built for the same purpose?  When I'm thinking of high accuracy in a 22lr, a good comparison would be some of the aftermarket bull barreled 10/22s you see around.  1/2" at 50 yards would be the standard I'd look for in a match or semi-match grade 22lr upper.

Short answer no or at least no mass produced ones
look for a review I did on the JPNC22 a few years ago
shoots as well as a stock 10/22 but not near as well as a match 10/22

This is from a really old post

So last week I was able to go out and really get a good idea of how my JP can shoot vs my CZ and what ammo works well with it
I shot 5 different kinds of 40gn match and target ammo thru both rifles on a perfect windless 73 degree day at Angeles shooting range at 25, 50, and 100 yards
so lets see how they shot
I used Aguila Match, Eley yellow box, CCI target, RWS match, and SK Standard plus
all targets we shot twice to get an idea of ammo consistency
First the CZ 455
Agila .30/.33
Eley .04/.13
CCI .23/.27
RWS .12/.19
SKsp .13/.24

JPNC22
Agila 1.95/.74
Eley .56/.45
CCI .87/.57
RWS .53/.66
SKsp .44/37

Now to 50 yards (did not shoot Eley I didn't bring enough)

CZ455
Agila .66/1.58
CCI 1.01/.43
RWS .57/.64
SKsp .41/.40

JPNC22
Agila 1.19/1.64
CCI .44/.43
RWS .80/.74
SKsp 1.30/1.48

100 yards

CZ455
Agila 2.94/2.23
CCI 2.19/1.79
RWS 1.00/1.10
SKsp 1.61/1.18

JPNC22
Agila 1.99/2.09
CCI 1.74/1.66
RWS 1.83/1.70
SKsp 3.44/2.51

So what did I find out
first there is nothing match about Aguila ammo it sucked in both my rifles
CCI match isn't great but its consistent
my JP doesn't like SK at all RWS seems to work best in it
my JP is not as accurate as my CZ by at least .5

Greetings,

Well, it might not be quite that accurate as you ask, but I'd purchased a DPMS upper (sold by them but made by a different company; can't recall which one) about 4ish years ago (shortly after they came out with this version and it got high grades here). I got the heavy "Bull" profile barrel w/ target crown version. It uses a different bolt type than the more common Ceiner based types (I prefer it too and think it superior in design; it looks to be the same as what JP uses). My range at home is only 40 yards and where I do most of my shooing, so I don't have much 50 or 100 yard data to compare. I've been trying many different ammo types, but none of the really expensive stuff. With the ammo types it likes, I can get pretty consistently under .5" (but at 40 yards) 5 shot groups; 10 shot groups are a slight bit larger and usually have a flyer (or two). I ended up selling my Spikes .22 upper (with the Green Mtn barrel) after getting much better results with this one.

The best performing ammo so far was a specific Fiocchi 38g (38-CPHP, 22FHVCHP). I had picked up a case at a pretty good price ($43/brick) about 2 years ago, but since then when I find it (quite rarely) it's been almost $90/brick, which I won't pay. All the ammo types I've used have been in the $40-$60/brick price range. Can't afford the really high end stuff, but I'd be interested to know if it would be that much better. I did try the higher end Wolf ($80/brick) and it was not as accurate as the Fiocchi 38g. CCI S/V shoots a bit worse, closer to .75". If you're seriously interested in the other ammo types I've tested, I'll bring my range book in and give you some more data.

SO, all in all for the $ at the time (I think it was around $325 for the upper), I'm pretty happy with it from an accuracy point of view. DPMS sucks in regards to parts support, which I've noted in previous posts about this upper (BTW, nothing has broken, but they would not sell any spares). I also want to mention that it would NOT function with a Gieslee SSA or SSA/E FCG. It worked perfectly with a standard "mil" unit and I ended up finding that it also works fine with a Rock River 2 stage NM (that's what's been in it since the G wouldn't work). All I've done to the upper was polish the feed ramp and tighten the barrel nut (which I considered somewhat loose when I took it apart to do the ramp). With it being on the market for a while now, you may be able to find one used at a price that would be worth trying out. Best of luck!

Regards, Jim

Both the JP and DPMS .22 uppers were made by Nordic...

A few years ago, Spikes made an upper with a 16" M4 profiled Lothar Walther barrel that was a tack driver.

Greetings,

Thanks Mick, that's the one! Perhaps JP will be willing to sell spare parts? I'll write them next week.

Regards, Jim

I have one of these. The upper is very nice and also quite accurate.

There have been shooters who have reprofiled Anschutz biathlon rifle barrels for their dedicated AR 22 uppers. There's nothing off-the-shelf at that level, at least that I know of, but there's nothing stopping the interested match 22 shooter from equipping their rifle with a seriously good barrel.

Maybe start at the dedicated 1:16 rifling barrel offerings and see how your setup, your trigger, and your nerves do with that setup before worrying about cannibalizing a multi-thousand dollar match gun for its barrel and having custom smith work done to your dedicated AR 22 upper, though.
