I'm building a 22 LR upper on the cheap and can't find any surplus 1:12/1:14 barrels. I know CMMG sells a 1:16 barrel but was trying to find something cheaper to build this pinker.

This is where they source that barrel ^^^^^, all they do is put the sight on for you. OK if you want a fixed sight, but I would rather get it cheaper. http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/m16-a1-5-56mm-20-1-12-twist-20-barrel/

Nice barrel, mine shoots great. If you want/need a front sight base buy one and add set screws to secure it...

Good deal! I picked up the TACCOM 16" 1:16 barrel.  I'm going to install a rifle length Hogue overholded handguard on it and looking for suggestion for open sights that can be mounted to the barrel.  Suppose I could install a basic gas block even though I don't need it.

GM has a good deal on lots of bbls, quite a few vendors re-brand with their name.

If I was going to build a 22 LR upper on the cheap I'd use this 16" TACCOM3 barrel.      http://www.taccom3g.com/barrel---steel-16-.html

The only way I would use a 1:12 barrel is if I wanted to be able to occasionally fire 5.56 in the barrel using a standard conversion kit.  I still think the dedicated 22 LR upper is the way to go.  With the price of forged lowers being so low it just makes since to me to eventually buy a lower to use with the dedicated 22 LR upper.

If you have access to an A-2 fixed front sight with bayonet lug you can thread the holes from the cross pins and attach the front sight base using Allen screws.   I used this setup on one of my builds and it has never come loose.  I used the CMMG dedicated 22 LR barrel but at that time they were about $100.  I also used Red Loctite to help hold the front sight base.

GM will be making some 1:14 test barrels soon.  He has done quite a few 1:6 barrels and is currently working on some 1:5 versions.
