I believe what your looking for is a Slab side or "slick side" upper

I went with one of these for my daughter's .22 AR. It does have the deflector though.

This is a model 1 9mm upper. It will need the hole for a gas tube drilled.

I found a colt upper like above in the EE, I was originally going to build it into a 556 after an adco gas hole drill.
The 9mm bug bit before I could do it though. |

I'll try to get the powers-that-be to do a limited run of 9mm A4s with the gas tube through hole/cloverleaf in them. We did all of them that way years ago, but stopped when 9mm production really took off and we weren't getting requests for them on 5.56 builds anymore.
