it's what i did with the top JRC 9mm, which ended up with a keymod float tube.  The OP should think outside of standard hand guards and sights. .

Nice option. However my option is plug n play. Yours requires lathe / smith time & expense.  It does give the OP another way to go.

True, I had a machinist friend and got to watch!

He ended up cutting the thread protector down to about 1/8" rather than using a full length one; its about as thick as a crush washer. No one made a midlength 22LR barrel so I had a 16" carbine profile cut down and re threaded. Would not be hard for adco or another shop to do this.
