Firstly, apologies for cross posting this (also in the build your own forum)

NYS legal requirements for an AR dictate that I have a fixed stock (done), 10 rd mags (or preban, done), no bayo (no brainer), and no flash hider nor the capability to install one (so either a non threaded barrel or one with a compensator permanently attached).

Personally, I like the look of a bull barrel in a rifle length tube for a 22, and I don't particularly care for a perm attached muzzle device.

So, aside from the aforementioned complete uppers that come with bull barrels (DPMS, Nordic Components), what other possibilities are out there for a component build? What 22 non threaded barrel, what 22 BCG, etc would be recommended by anyone who has done this?

American Tactical Imports in Rochester distributes a Chiappa upper in .22 that is nys compliant.

That's helps, is Chiappa an Atchison style?

May have told you wrong. They sell it with 10 round but needs a little adjustment to be compliant

Yeah, and the upper appears to be polymer. I'd prefer to stick wih forged. Just personal preference.

I think if I was in your situation I'd assemble my own 22 upper. CMMG sells 16" & 20" threaded barrels with the conversion collar. Spikes and Model 1 sales also sell 22 long rifle barrels for the AR. I'd build the upper with what ever handguard/float tube I wanted and just silver solder a muzzle brake on the barrel. You don't need a gas block but can add a ban compliant A-2 fixed sight or a railed gas block.

CMMG had a thread requesting preferences for ban compliant barrels a couple months ago. You might check to see how long it will be for them to introduce this barrel configuration.

Tactical solution has a light weight ban compliant upper which has a different appearance than the DPMS. You might also contact redtazdog here on ARF.com as he machines barrels for 22LR AR's.

I would build one the way you like that is NY ready.
Start with a stainless CMMG 22 kit with the dedicated collar, most any of the kits cmmg has to offer
can be purchased with the dedicated collar if you call and order the kit that way.
If you like bull barrels Beyer barrels makes them nice and light and they shoot good too.

So for a Beyer barrel I'd need not only the barrel but the breach collar too? Does that attach to the barrel breech or is that attachd in place of the chamber adapter of the cmmg conversion? Or is that the same thing? </enddumbquestions>

Also, the TacSol Lt upper is a threaded barrel which would require additional pinning for NY. I also wonder about the effect of the screw on 'target crown' on accuracy.

can u tell I'm an engineer? :-)

For a beyer barrel (or any other dedicated .22 barrel), you switch out the chamber adapter on the bolt carrier group to a collar. When I purchased a barrel from beyer he included a collar.

Tag. I think I'm going to go with a CMMG & have a YHM brake pinned since I couldn't bring my Spike's 5.5" barreled upper, but I'm keeping an eye on this thread.

Just saw this thread.. I have been going through the SAME dilemma for the past few months looking for a nY compliant, reliable and accurate dedicated 22 upper. CMMG required you to mail them your own muzzle device and then they charge you $65 to pin it, plus $10 to remove the bayonet lug, plus shipping. Your looking at a $600 .22 upper (not worth it to me).

I also considered chiapa but heard bad reviews. DPMS and tacsol look awesome but they're 6 months back ordered.

I just (today at 2pm) ordered a custom CMMG upper with a match Beyer barrel (non threaded) and a 12" free float handguard from Clint Beyer himself! I contacted him is the phone number on his website and he told me he would build me a compliant one no problem. I spent less than $450 (handguards scratched from being handled at a gumshow). I would contact him if you didn't order one already. He has a few different models in stock.

I think I know what hand guard that is and will probably see it again this weekend when Clint and I get together.

Make sure he hides it and doesn't leave it out for sale! lol. We made plans to ship it out on Monday after he tried to find a 10 Ed mag to ship it with from the gun show!

So right now I'm building my own. I'm doing the CMMG dedicated barrel/collar combo with stainless conversion kit. I found a couple of inexpensive A3 uppers (ive got 2 lowers waiting, one will be a 300BLK SBR) I'm going to put a RRA LE entry stock and probably go with YHM rifle length hand guard. I'll then probably just silver solder a brake myself (presuming that is legal for NY).

My new dilemma is that my daughter is a lefty but we don't know yet whether she shoots left.......
