And why are they so much more expensive than a standard .223 upper receiver?

Why not use a std AR-16 / M16 upper ?
Hole is just cosmetic when using 9mm, I took a blown out gas tube and cut it short so it act as barrel nut stop like the 223/556 along with the std upper I am using,, forward assist and shell deflector is decoration too. ![]() |

Mine leaves the port forward and right, maybe 45 degree,, I use Uzi mags w/ Hy-Tech block, eject finger high and tight to the slot in bolt, and 7oz A2 rifle buffer with A2 stock

One has nothing...a flat sided RRA upper that I took the gas deflector off of just because. The second one uses a standard 5.56 AR upper. Doesn't seem to make a difference, they both pump it out to the same spot. |

Well, RRA makes them of course, but they're pricey ($175 for flat top / $195 for A2): http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=242 Model1Sales has them as well (flat top only, $130): http://www.model1sales.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=415 Somebody posted a review of the Model1Sales upper around here somewhere. It was a positive review, and it was confirmed to have no gas tube hole. Hope that helps, -Raeth |

The one thing to watch for if you want to use it for 5.56 is the cam pin clearance cut. Nodak Spud 9mm uppers don't have that and won't accept a 5.56 BCG. |

I just went ahead and got a RRA 223 upper from PK Firearms for $94 (on sale). It seemed everyone was either overpriced or out of stock.
