I have a Spikes ST22 setting on top a Superior arms lower. I keep hearing about the notched hammers not working well with the Spikes. Could someone please educate me?

The AR15 hammer shown has the notch at the upper face of the hammer.  The M16 hammer is rounded at the top with no notch.

You can get a non-full-auto un-notched hammer from DPMS.  Or you could modify an M16 hammer by removing the tail at the rear of the hammer.

DPMS is the go to source for un-notched hammers.

My Bushmaster, RRA and Eagle Arms hammers are all notched.

Hammers have come with notches to varying degrees. Some will work and some won't. I use a dummy round to test and see if the firing pin will bust the rim of a 22 hard enough to reliably fire. Then cycle the bolt completely to see if it's going to hang up on the hammer. Those are the 2 problems caused by notched hammers. Safest and most reliable thing to do is install an un-notched hammer with a matching trigger.

Some (or maybe all new) CMT/Stag LPK's have "no-notch" hammers, too.

I run a DPMS no-notch hammer in my current 9mm setup.

"No-notch" hammer + ramped bolt = smooth as butta!
