I finally got around to doing a POI shift test in my A2 20"er. I probably should've been more anal and used a new target each time, but you will probably get the picture.
Needless to say I'm not happy with it. I always knew it did this, but I wasn't sure how bad it was. If I used even more loads of more varying size / weight bullets, it would show even larger spreads. At least I'm going by past experience.
This time I used (4) 55 grain loads and M855. The 55 grain were at least mostly on windage wise. A little bit. But then the M855 was shifted 3" to the left from the center of most of the 55 grain loads. Another thing to note is that Q3131 sucks balls in that gun. And XM193 shot super well. Wolf wasn't all that bad.
All shots were taken at 50 yards.
The waters get kind of muddied in the picture but you can at least see the disparity between the M855. That would be 6" at 100. I'm not sure I can really live with that. Both my M4gery and my Recce don't do this at all. And they're also more accurate. Actually the A2 can be real accurate, but it's more picky about what it will be accurate with than other guns. Personally, I've had this experience with another Colt I owned. I'm sure some will blame me, but my other two AR's don't do this. I shoot NTCH for repeatability.
Anyways...... I really want to my old alpha duece to play SHTF / bedside gun, but I just don't like how it does this. If I had crap load of xm193, I'd be set. But I don't. I have a good amount of Q3131A, Q3131, XM193, M855, AND some .223 ,black hills and such. I guess I just have to save this gun for 1 load. I wish I would've just bought XM193 for a while now. Oh well.
It's probably a moot point anyways because even at 50 yards my eyes struggle with the irons. It's better with the 20"er but optics are easier.
