In 1985, I purchased my 1st AR15.  It was an A2 that was on sale at a local LGS for $499.95
Ran down to the shop based upon the ad in the local Recycler magazine.

Shot it and kept it for about a year, and then for some odd reason, chose to sell it.
It was an AR15A2, non-sear block green label?   (If you are more up on the colors
used in 1985, please let me know) Then the 1989
ban when through, and I thought all AR's were done for in the state.

Long story short, I always thought I had bought a R6500.  Until I read on the BR2 that the
shell deflector didn't come out on the A1 until 1989... meaning, what I had bought and
had nostalgia for was actually a R6401.

Fast forward to today, and thanks to fellow member Pro2am (who hooked me up with the gloss
handguard and grip as per the original) it has officially come back to life.

So there you have it, my original R6401. She's all colt, except the NDS 603 upper (thank you NDS!)
Brings back good memories :)

thx, the cat is a big ham and always tries to get her photo taken ;)

On a side note, does anyone know exactly what was in the 1985 accessory packs?
I think I have the correct sling on it, and thinking about the manual, I sorta
recall it had a camo cover of some kind.

If you know, please let me know, want to get it right.
thx!

Great looking rifle! Love the glossy handguards. I've got a beat up pair of USGI handguards that I've been polishing to a nice shine and I know one day they will miraculously turn into a complete rifle similar to yours. I like the simple fields sights over the A2's but A2 handguards feel much better to me than triangular ones.

Wow, the glossy A2 HG's and PG looks way better on your rifle than they were sitting around in my parts bin  I found some pics of a 6401 that owner bought in 1986 that was listed sale on Armslist a while back.  It looks like a slab-side SP2 lower and since these were truly transitional rifles, you can see that color of upper and lower didn't match.  I'm sure you have some Colt 20's sitting around.  So all you need is a green manual, which I might have one sitting around too.

Great pics - thx for that
Looking at that A2 stock, the colorations are
Much more like an E type stock vs the matte
wonder how to replicate?  Oil?
Also can see the buttplate is gloss.

The raised fence is interesting, all the Sporter II's I've seen had slab side lowers

Good catch - my fault however in not explaining the lower is a sear blocked
Match Target Colts, as we are not allowed any lowers marked AR15 :(
So the lower is much newer - but the spirit of my original 6401 lives on :)
