Have a pending A2 build(waiting for upper to arrive from EE seller), and want a basic black silent sling. Which sellers are selling the real ones? I've bought several NIP, that came with Colt rifles-tagged with NSN, that were more like the strap from a cheap duffel bag. Looking for the sling that's basically the same webbing as a BDU belt.

Someone pointed me to Charlie's Surplus but the pics make me think those are just another lightweight sling-GI labeling or not.

I have never seen a silent sling made with any substantial webbing like the older M1 slings. There are a few boxed up in my garage, from my days working for our favorite uncle, that are made from flimsy webbing. These aren't much more than a carrying strap that can be used for a hasty sling.

The ones we had in the Guard unit I was in(96-02) seemed to be the same webbing as the BDU belts-not as heavy as M1 slings but the slings Colt has been putting out in recent years are more like what comes with the Hi-Point carbines.

Unless you HAVE to have a silent sling....I'd opt for the Sling, M1. plenty of A2s and A4s had it on them.

JMHO..

Looking to do a clone of the one I had...thinking about going so far as to order a Nodak lower with custom SN to get it as close as possible.

The silent sling I have that came with my A2 is not very heavy.   And I think it's a true silent sling, from what I've seen others call it that.  I'm not sure what you had, but it sounds like something different.  Was it OD?  Or black?

Black sling with metal keepers. In between the slings that are shipping with rifles and the green web sling on a M1 for thickness.

Upon thinking about it, the first silent slings came out during the mid 1970's. I would imagine those were a heavier webbing than the ones from the 1990's that I have.

If you can't find a good heavier silent sling you could possibly modify a black M1 sling... or purchase a length of  1 1/4" black webbing and use the slides you have from the wimpy sling.

I know exactly what you're talking about, and yes the silent slings available for retail sale now are a newer version.  I have the newer version on my clone but can tell the difference.

Thanks for the heads-up.  Amazon 1-click makes it too easy...

Omahas M16 Silent Sling
This looks like the USMC sling I had issued 87-91.

these are legit usgi. I just bought a couple and I immediately noticed they are heavier than silent slings I had botten from cdnn before.

I took some pics of my "silent sling" that I think is a legit one.  It's old.  Like probably more than 20 years.

I'm pretty sure this is a pic of one in the service:

Exactly. Looks like the exact same webbing as a GI BDU belt. The ones currently shipping with rifles are a touch narrower and much thinner-like they're cut off a Walmart duffel bag. The one above is exactly like the one I picked up on ebay for $7ish. Need to get round to ordering more now that I found them.
