So I took apart my A2 for the first time in about 3 years since I bought it. Crazy, I know. Anyways, I was wondering what this red piece is if anyone knows.

Thanks

Its an "accurizing wedge". Supposed to tighten up the lower/upper fit.

Ahhh. So should I just leave it or see how it does without it?

It's a gimmick.  It makes the upper fit tighter to the lower.  Which doesn't effect accuracy at all.

It's called an "Accuwedge". All it does is push up on the upper receiver against the takedown pin. It's just some kind of rubber/silicone, it will come right out.

I bought the gun used, maybe the gun before me put it in considering its age.

It looks like a Colt lower with the sear-block to prevent use of the DIAS and full-auto bolt carrier.  How about some pictures of that gorgeous rifle OP?

Your wish is my command. Bought the rifle used from a ffl. Had no idea what I was buying at the time. I walked in to buy ammo and said "hey, that rifle looks cool, I'll take it." Did some research and it seems to be a pre ban Colt. Are there any markings or anything I could look for?

I don't have any great pictures, sorry.

Oldie

Very nice Colt AR-15A2 HBAR.  Upper should have C M or C MB forge mark and the proof marks from Colt just forward of the EP like the picture below (Sorry about the size of the pic).  The half-moon bolt carrier should be marked with a C and bolt marked MPC.  You can contact Colt to find out when your rifle was actually produced.  But it won't matter much where you are in the great state of TX.  Another item I noticed, but couldn't really tell because the trigger group was a bit out of focus--but it looks like someone installed after-market 2-stage or some type of adjustable trigger.  In either case, it's looks like a fine rifle that hasn't been "bubba-ed" with and she should bring a big smile to your face every time you take her out to the range

Thank you sir! This rifle is my baby. I've gone through a few other ar's but I will never get rid of this one.

The trigger is the nicest one I've ever pulled. It's insanely smooth and light. I assumed that maybe it was the original colt trigger that had just worn down causing it to be so light but maybe you're right. Here are some pictures including the markings I've found. Oh yeah, I took the "wedge" out and it's a little loose. :( so I put it back in. lol

You better NOT get rid of her because that looks like a Jewel 2-stage match trigger for Colt large .174 trigger and hammer pins.  Midway use to carry these triggers, but I don't think they do anymore:

If you do your part with good quality ammo, that rifle will shoot under MOA all day long, especially with the Jewel trigger  The $10,000 question is, how much did you pay for this rifle 3 years ago?

Can you get a better nonblurry pic of the hammer and trigger mechanism. I'm on my phone but it looks like that's not the original trigger and hammer. Am I seeing a set screw in the trigger?

Btw nice rifle. I have a Sporter Match HBAR without the sear block, that chunk of steel pinned above the safety lever. Despite having the most horrendous trigger of any of my ARs it is one of my favorites.

Pro2ndAm: The trigger looks like the one you posted. I paid about $1,100 or just under for it. I was still new to the ar scene so I wasn't really sure of what a good price was. I had to put my trust in the gun shop that it was fair.

At the local shooting range there is a gong, between 8"-10", about 400 yards out and this rifle will hit all over it. I haven't adjust the sights since I've owned it so no clue what the previous owner sighted it in at. My lwrc with an aimpoint doesn't shoot as nice as this one. Everyone that shoots my colt falls in love with it. Too bad they don't make that trigger anymore because I'd buy another one.

You scored Cobra!  IIRC, the Jewel triggers retailed just a little over $200 bucks, which was a whole lot at the time consider these Colt Sporters were selling between $700 to $800 bucks.

Bob, I think it's time to drink the Geiselle Kool-Aid and upgrade that horrendous trigger:  They make an SSA for .170 pins

Mines got a slab side SP numbered lower. Big pivot pin and standard fire control pins.

I'm a happy, willing and indulgent Geiselle cool aid drinker (4 AR triggers so far) but way back when the only trigger option was the very hard to find Kreiger-Milazzo piece (pre internet days) and sent the lower off for a Williams set trigger mod. Overall I've never been excited about what I paid vs what I got but it's better enough that I'm not inclined to replace it.

Yes. But it's also discontinued. You may have to shop around some to find another. Try Brownell's.

Or go with a Geissele. Their High Speed trigger is fully adjustable but more expensive. I would recommend the High Speed DMR. It can be adjusted to pull weights under 4.5#. The Match is for NRA High Power match shoot with a minimum pull weight of 4.5#. The Target trigger is adjustable down to 2#/2.5# or so. Too low for most applications in my opinion. Though a good choice for a bench or varmint gun.

Giselle also makes nonadjustable triggers that are awesome. The standard is the SSA with a pull weight of 4.5# and the SSA-E which is 3.5#. I have one each of these and they are great but my DMR trigger is still nicer and is the counterpart to yours.

Ah, didn't see it was discontinued. My dad has a non adjustable geiseele trigger in his ar and it's just ok. Still too heavy for my liking. I'll look into the DMR trigger.

I really like my SSA and SSA-E, they're in general purpose carbines, but the DMR has a different feel to it and I LOVE it.

This is going to sound insane, but I like the heavy Colt trigger on mine for a defensive gun......

Nice rifle.  The accuwedge could stay or go.  I have one in mine too. I think it tightens upper to lower fit a bit.  I just don't like em when they're all wobbly.

Before Giselle came along it was near impossible to find a decent trigger for the AR. there was the M-K and the harder yet to find Knight's. It took a while before I could stomache the price of the DMR but once I did I was sold. Got on the waiting list with ADCO when the SSA was announced. Eventually bought a SSA-E and then a second for a couple of carbines.

I am a solid, dedicated drinker of the Giselle Kool Aid.

Everyone's knee jerk reaction is to say it shouldn't affect accuracy.  But who want's a gun that feels like it is wobbling apart?  I knew this guy that showed my his Oly and that thing felt like it swung 10 degrees to the let and to the right.

Of course they're not all that bad, but I'd prefer it to feel solid.
