Gonna get some
from the cloners, but that's OK...
Ever since I was in high school (early 80s) I've loved the look of the XM177 series. I've always wanted one, but I've never had the patience or willingness to spend $$ to source accurate parts for a true clone.
So, I decided to build an XM177E1-ish SBR on whatever available parts got me close enough. That ended up being Griffin Armament's XM Linear Comp, DPMS A2 upper, PSA 10.5" complete AR barrel assembly (part of a $300 complete upper weekend deal), el-cheapo single heatshield handguards, an M&A Parts milspec CAR stock, and an extra SBR lower I had sitting in the safe. I was surprised the PSA upper came with the bayonet lug shaved off -- I thought I'd have to grind it off myself, so that was a bonus.
The XM Linear Comp makes the short barrel almost pleasant to be around and the iron sights are just plain fun. Weight is just under 6lbs empty, making the carbine easy to shoot offhand. No problems to report after 50 rounds to zero the irons at 50yds and bang a 6" steel plate at 100yds. I haven't shot for groups and probably never will, but I'd estimate 2MOA on average, which is acceptable accuracy (to me) for a simple irons-only trunk gun.
No issues at all with the F-marked FSB zeroing with the A2 rear sight. So far, I'm very happy with this little popgun!
