Currently Building a Mod 723. Using a Colt M16A1 C H upper with A1 sights, A2 large button FA, and A2 ejection port door. C marked BCG. Barrel will be a DD 14.5" LW 1/7 twist, .625 at gas port and A2 front sight FH using peel washer. Hand guards small with single heat shield and Delta ring. Lower a NDS M16A1 w/Colt LPK, Colt A2 grip, NDS CAR buffer tube/castle nut, and Colt fiber lite N 1 stock. This is nothing more than a modified 653.

My only question concerning this build: Would the front sight base be a modern "F", or a Colt marked C w/Bell (both .625 at base)? I'm calling this a early 723, not a later version. I've included some a Colt brochure and picture for comparison. Thanks guys!

Ok, so I'll be calling this an early Model 723 utilizing a Colt A1 FSB w/Bell. Rifle will be going off to John Thomas @ Retro Arms Works end of next week for final assembly of upper receiver. RAW will also be providing a custom spacer instead of an extended A2 FH that will be pinned and welded. Prefer that look. I'm assuming early mid 80's the U.S. military had adopted the black silent sling and it would be correct? Pictures once rifle returns.

LE: I've been monkeying with other retro projects and that's why I've been slow to finishing this rifle.

At some point on some video I've also seen guys have OD slings that I THINK were M14 slings, in this era.  Early A2 era.  The kind with the flip latch.

This sounds like a cool build.  Looking forward to pics.

Thank you! I just happen to have an extra M1/M14 sling laying around (It helps living 6 miles from Camp Perry CMP North Store).  I'll see how both look and feel before I make final decision. Still waiting on NoDak Spud for my lower receiver extension. May be up to 2 more weeks. They contacted me last week stating they were not happy with current batch of extensions. Threads tighter than I like. I appreciate this type of customer service. Makes the wait worth while.

I've got no pics to back up what I said.  I remember seeing it on a video somewhere, I think.   But I would think it could be feasible.  Only thing is they make more noise.  I always put tape on mine around the metal tab that attaches to the sling loop.

Many of the M14 slings were used on M16s back in the '60s and '70s. When I went through boot camp in '78, the Marine Corps was still using them. These are the only slings I use on my retro ARs. I usually get mine from What-A-Country.

Just in from John Thomas at Retro Arms Works. Today 2 position receiver extension due in from NoDak Spud. Note barrel bushing JT made for 14.5" barrel so I'd be legal.

Thanks JJREA. Was relieved and satisfied once my NoDak Spud receiver extension and castle nut arrived. NDS notified me that an earlier batch of extensions the threads were too tight to they're liking. So I opted to wait on another run and glad I did. This is a cool little platform of an A2 and looking forward to shooting it soon. I'm still undecided on a sling? I assume the black silent sling shown is period correct, but also have a M1/M14 sling that looks good. Anyone have concrete evidence what sling would be correct for a Model 723? Thx!

Silent sling is right.

550 cord attachments were common as well.

In the "BHD" thread, you can see several varieties of slings in use, ranging from rigged up silent slings, to HK MP5 slings, M60, etc.

Hopefully this Friday in a perfect world. Also, need to take out a newly built 605. Both need some loving.

Duuuuuuuude, a 605!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   And this?    Side by side comparison report would be super nice.  I'm kind of fond of rifle length irons and fixed buttstocks, so I dare say I'd like the 605 better.  But I've never got to shoot one.  But this one is probably lighter........

You really need to build yourself a 605. I recently did one and it shoots great. The rifle-length gas system is really a plus. Do not get me wrong, I like my carbine and mid-length gas system ARs too, but the rifle-length systems is so smooth.

Only complaint is I can't stand the old handguards.  Did you have the gas port opened up?  You live in mostly hot weather though.  I'd be a bit concerned about it up here.

The barrel was worked over by John Thomas (Retro Arms Works). The gas port was opened up to .110". I live in NW Florida, so I do live in a warmer climate. I do not know that I would be concerned about the larger gas port. For the weapon to cycle as it needs to, it is necessary. As for the handguards, I am an old school AR guy, so they do not bother me at all. I qualified on a M16A1 back in the late 1970s when I was in the Marine Corps.
