Looking for the best (readily available) A2 upper.

Nobody? Assembling myself is certainly an option but I want to know what is available off the rack so to speak. Google wasn't all that helpful.

Check out Windham Weaponry. They have a variety of A2 carbine and rifle barreled assemblies.

ETA: My mistake.

What you may want to do is get a complete A2 upper receiver, a Windham Weaponry A2 Gov't profile barrel assembly, Delta ring assembly, and gas tube and assemble your own.

Barrel

Gas Tube/pin

Charging Handle

Crush washer

Delta ring assembly

RRA Forged A2 Upper Receiver Assembly

All you will need in addition to these items is the M16 BCG of your choosing.

Unless I'm retarded I'm only seeing "A2 assemblies" w/ detachable carry handles.

Some of their pictures are wrong. You have to read the descriptions. Which upper assembly are you looking for?

No A2 uppers at Wyndam...just a bunch of A4 20".

Yes that's what I'm looking for, I could have been more clear. Would prefer to not go DPMS. I think the answer to the question is what I suspected- If I want Colt like quality I will have to assemble myself.

Bear in mind, that is a Heavy Contour Barrel and not a Gov't profile barrel.

It is also a 1/9 twist and not a correct 1/7 twist like the Gov't profile barrel.

Ah, saw DPMS and didn't read into the specs much. I want gov't profile.

Here's a DPMS stripped upper: http://www.cdnnsports.com/ar15-upper-receiver-a2-stripped-fixed-carry-dpms.html#.VTRiJmb57l0

You can build it with the barrel/handgaurd/FSB of your desire.

Or this: http://www.dpmsinc.com/A2-Upper-Receiver-Assembled_p_248.html

Add this: https://www.windhamweaponry.com/shopexd.asp?id=309&bc=no

Then this: https://www.windhamweaponry.com/shopexd.asp?id=321&bc=no

All in for less than $500, gotta love it!

Why would you have him overpay for the A2 receiver?

CDNN has those exact same stripped DPMS A2 receivers right now for $39.99 + around $8 shipping and DPMS sells their A2 receiver completion kits (ejection door kit, forward assist kit, and A2 rear sight assembly) for $50 + free shipping on all orders of $50 or more.

OP could also just wait for one of these to come back in stock and swap out the receiver on it for one of the stripped DPMS A2 receivers.  They sell for just over $400 complete with BCG and CH, plus they have FN CHF barrels.  Net investment after adding the complete A2 receiver and taking off the flat top receiver should be just over $450.

FN barrels are the best in my opinion, followed by Colt and the Elisco P MP barrels. All those are military and would need to be assembled unless you find someone selling a complete upper on the EE.

What about Model 1 sales? They have a gov't profile with 1/7 ER Shaw chrome lined barrel. Any good?

This thread probably just saved me some headaches. I was going to order that upper from Model 1 sales For a clone build of the second rifle Uncle Sam issued me.

Kinda' surprising that the A2 stuff is as scarce as it is.

I did suggest the CDNN deal on my previous post, however, if the OP is not up for assembling the A2 rearsight, considering you need a special tool, then the assembled upper may be to his preference.

Rock River has A2 20"

Thanks, looks like only 1:8 and 1:9 though. Pricey also for what I wouldn't consider a premium brand.

Premium brand? You started a thread asking for best without any qualifications. That's like asking who makes the yummiest hotdog!

Yep already apologized for the lack of clarity in my OP. And I understand the difference between subjective and objective. I've been trying to add clarity as I go.

Premium (which I guess also could be subjective) brand

20' bbl

Gov't profile

1:7

Like I also said early, I may have answered my own question- what I want doesn't exist in "off the rack form". Not a big deal, assembly (besides the a2 sight, which I've never done) is not difficult, was just looking for a complete upper assembly.

I went with a Windham 20" barrel
DPMS A2 upper
Rock River rear sight (got it cheap)
PK Firearms handguard
AIM BCG
DD gas tube
Off the shelf charging handle

To assemble you'd need a armorers wrench, punch set, upper vise block and some sort of tool to depress the spring in the A2 rear sight. A member posted that he used a cheap pick and bent the tip over to depress the spring.

Nothing wrong with M1S.  Don't pay any attention to "I've heard" advice.  I've had an M1S rifle for several years now.  They had new production triangle handguards at the time I bought from them.  No problems at all with their kit or the results.

Lol. I feel fortunate of only heard (and read) from multiple sources instead of  experienced myself.
