You're on an old school SOCOM kick as of late huh? Suddenly I see you posting decade pre-GWOT accessories and see pieces of your CQBR on the EE.

I love this old stuff too. I need build a clone of one of these bad boys. Starting to miss my 727, so maybe it's time for an early SOCOMish build

Funky.  I've seen that last one posted.  But maybe that's the same thing without the outer shroud......

yes, the hood was part of a "hardened" package i believe. before the hood became standard.

lol yeah, i decided as far as clones, i only really like M4 barrels with FSBs. my cqbr got a geissele smr and an aimpoint micro .  and ive always loved the 727/723.

I've been considering turning my CQBR into a 14.5 Block 1, this will technically be my third if you count a PR. But as far as block 1 goes, I definitely prefer the 14.5 as well.

im thinking about SBRing an 80% lower and having multiple 14.5 uppers for it. 727/Pre-SOPMOD/Block 1/etc.  but do i mark it M16A2 carbine for the 727, or M4A1?  or maybe XM4A1 and cover everything?

I'd probably just do 2 80 percenters, maybe pin/weld 1 upper dedicated for 1 lower/engraved for that weapon, then stamp the other 80 and get it engraved to match the others maybe? That's a pickle for sure lol

Then put up or shut up........

Just kidding.  Are you gonna build one of these?  My milspec buffer tube is at my local ups hub, hopefully coming monday.  Slapping the CAR stock I have on there, hopefully it fits well.  I'm kind of broke lately and I don't know if I will go any further than that.  I think a period correct optic would be sweeeeet.  But it may be a while.  And strangely enough, even though it doesn't seem to be the "go to" optic, I want a reflex, as long as I'm not seeing the reticle double.  But I like the idea of that optic.  It might not be super bright in the desert, but I live in the midwest and don't think we would have that issue here.    It's lw though and I like no batteries.  Plus trijicon is merican.  Them aimpoints come from across the pond.

My holy grail optic would be the TA01NSN though.   Maybe someday......

I recently just got rid of my TA01NSN. Traded it off for an EXPS 3-0, M3X, and cash. I really liked the NSN, but the TA31 series is really a better optic for me. (I need an illuminated reticle)

Did you see those early eotechs much?  Or any eotechs much in even the late 90's?

I came across these vids on youtube called BCM American Gunfighter and the second one in the series is about a guy named Tom Spooner.  I think he might have run in similar circles as you maybe about the same time.  ???  I forget if it was 7th SF group you were in or not.  He said he was in that after Desert Storm and then eventually DELTA.  Actually, I'll link it.  I just thought maybe you knew him....  I like his story and the thing he set up for transitioning warriors after retiring.

I was just reading about eotechs and I guess the first one came out in 96.  I wonder how fast they made it on to our guys' rifles, even if it was bought off of the shelf.  I wonder which model was the first one.  I'll try to figure that out.

the earliest model ive seen in pics is this style.

ETA: heres a pic posted by Pat McNamara, not sure on date/details. but that model eotech with the armalite free float tubes.

I do know a couple of guys over in CAG but not him.  Spent most of my time in either 1/5th (Bragg & Campbell) or 1/10th (Bad Tolz & Stuttgart).  First red dots we got in 5th were the Trijicons Relexs then M68 Aimpoints (used a earlier model going thru SFARTEAC in 97).  Most of the time when we got the M4A1 in 95' ran either the carrying handle or TA01NSN ACOG.  Didn't see any EoTechs in Group until after 03'

Wow.   03 for the eotechs........    I remember you saying earlier you guys had the KAC 300m too.  I'm guessing that was when you started with the Aimpoints.......

It was crazy, after you mentioned Pat McNamara I just noticed that one of those videos has him in it.  I'm assuming it's the same guy.

I know.. I'm debating about painting mine OD.  That green seems a little too bright for my tastes though..... But still cool.  I like something different than FDE.  Or tan or coyote.  Although I do like dark brown and some of those browns.  Some of them are so light though....

Well there's not much socom about it, but maybe those items will come eventually.  I should scrape some money together to get the surefire 3P / 6P with the barrel mount.  For starters.......

The other thing is I really like it with a CCH as far as handling and weight goes, but might not fit with the era.  But whatever....  It's a difference of a quarter pounder....  but for some reason that makes a big difference in feel to me.

Eventually I'd like to do some nice pics with my M9.... but this will have to do for now.  I can't wait to shoot this thing again.

I'd paint up my future BHD build in that color if I can find it.

I got to looking at this picture more last night and noticed some weird things.  I can't tell if those are removable carry handles or not.  But the two that are real visible to me have the eotech on top of the carry handle and then have those cheek riser things.  Now that's high.  LOL.  I'm not  one that falls into the category of berating carry handled optics, but when you put an eotech on there it's extra high because they're already made for eye height on the rail.    Seems kind of strange to me.  They have they PEQ-2's I think, so you would think they had flat tops available.  And those might even be flat tops with a carry handle on them.  Maybe they didn't have any buis at the time and didn't want to forgo that option........

Plus I always find it interesting when guys run their stocks all the way.  And then they also have the rubber buttstock thingies.  That's got to make for a long LOP.  But they're probably much bigger than I am.

Now the latter part of my question.  If the PEQ-2 didn't come out until 2000, were any lasers used during the 90's?  And if so, what kind?

The much more common and recognizable AN/PAQ-4C was introduced around 1993:

It's the camera angle that makes that HG looks a little longer than it should.  Barrel looks to be an M4 with the step cut for M203.  But in this picture, everything in front of the FSB looks a bit longer

That hand guard makes it look that way too. That looks like a Bushmaster V-match carbine. The free float hand guard omits the delta ring assembly so it makes the handguard look longer.
