I purchased an A2 upper to replace the one on my PD trade in Colt 6520. It suffered some rack damage on the carry handle and I wanted to get that fixed. When it arrived I tried it on the lower and found that the anodizing on the Colt had turned purple-ish and the lower didn't match the new upper.  At that point I reevaluated the swap anyways since I bought the 6520 as a beater, so tossed some Alumablack on the wear and called it a day.

Now I have a spare upper laying around and I'm trying to decide which route to go with it. I have a pile of stripped lowers in the safe so it's all about just figuring out a configuration. I'm stuck between either a 14.5" carbine length barrel and going with a 723ish clone for my SBR lower, or a 20" M16A2 configuration. Been wanting a 20" AR, but the upper has M4 feed ramp grooves. Anyone have any suggestions for govt profile 20" barrels utilizing m4 barrel extensions?  Or suggestions on a different configuration to go for with this build?  I have an older set of CAR 6 hole handguards, a pile of N/1 CAR stocks, and a nice colt 20" rifle handguard as well.

It is tough to decide sometimes. Considering the wear on the original upper, you could just swap the 2 and call it a day, or build something else. I am in the same boat as you, trying to decide, so I am not going to try to offer advice.  I also have an upper that I cant decide what to build with it either.

I decided to leave the 6520 as is. I cleaned up all of the rack wear with Alumablack and it does not affect the function of the rifle. I really want a 14.5" LW carbine / Colt 723 clone, but I'm leaning towards the M16A2 build since the 6520 is very similar and the A2 upper isn't correct for the 723. On top of that, I've never owned an AR with a barrel length over 16"..... Just need to find a Govt Profile barrel in 1/7 twist with m4 feed ramp grooves to match the upper I gave.

Pick one of these 3:

1. 20" GI Profile standard A2

2. 18" GI Profile barrel A2

3. 20" Light weight profile A2

Don't forget 16" dissipator in either gov't profile or HBAR

HBAR is too heavy for no real world gain.  Besides, he doesn't have any rifle length ARs and wants something different.  He doesn't need another 16".

I have a penchant for 18" A2s!  ;)

At this point I'm really digging a 20" govt profile A2... Although that 18" may be something to look into.

I'd do the 20" gov't profile rifle...

Anyone other than Windham Weaponry make a 20" 1/7 govt profile that has a barrel extension for m4 feed ramp cuts?

FN's 18" and 20" CHF .  Pricey, but the top of the line.

+1 on the FN CHF Barrels.

I do believe that the FN CHF Barrels are basically, top of the line barrels for a Service Rifle.

They average around $300.  Brownell's is supposed to be carrying all lengths, including the 20".  Riflegear.com carries the 18" one.

I have the 18" version on my "modern" A2 and love it! It's just the right length, and has rifle gas. I mounted it to a FN A2 upper with a12" DD Light rail and stock A2 (non F) front sight.
I like this one better than my A2 dissy and my 20" FN A2 surplus upper!
My vote is for the FN 18" if you haven't guessed.

I would choose the 18" myself as a first choice.  Show us a pic of your rig, Chris.

Here's something you could do with an A2 upper.

Good luck trying to find the M203 style 37mm flare launcher.  Most  of the ones out there have some ugly spacer that makes it extend lower from the rifle.

Good points. If you're patient, you can find one on an auction site (which is what I did). And yeah, the thing hangs down too far. But I think the mounting brackets can be tweaked to correct that.

Or you could do the "reams of paperwork and rectal exam" to get a real M203.

Thanks for talking down to us in such a condescending manner.  In all your wisdom, did you ever stop to consider that not everyone may want to spend $1,500+ on what will basically amount to an ornament even if it is "real"?

Rifle > carbine.

Sounds like the decision is made.

Something I always thought of doing, was basically making a "retro" SDM-R; Like the Colt Delta HBAR, but instead use a DCM type barrel and free float handguards.
