Well, putting together a few "A2 era" carbine (and 20" A2) projects, and would like some ideas on what sort of optics to put on them..... Aimpoints get boring.

Typically, the A2 era carbine was more of a Tier 1 item; Those same guys generally rated optics......

From the threads here, and period photos, I seem to gather-

ACOG TA01s, TA11s.

Aimpoints of various vintages/types

Hensoldt 4x24 and 6x42.

Any other ideas or inputs?

C More Scout, my Uncle got one for his AR when he came back from Iraq, He said some Iraqi police used them and he liked how they looked. Lots of good memories in the backyard with his Colt Sporter.

Not my Pic

In the 90's USMC the only optic for an M16A2 was the MK I Eyeball.

A2 era is big. During Desert Shield/Storm you saw a few ACOG's and a bunch of private purchase 3x, 4x Colt type scopes. Need a light? Use a hose clamp with a Mag light
CCO's became the norm in 1999 (ish).

Good luck

You've pretty much covered the common ones - along with the C-More, depending on what you consider "A2 era" there are carry handle mount versions of the Meprolight, Elbit Falcon, and Trijicon Reflex.

In the BHD thread there is a pic of a Leupold MK4 M3(aka:M3A day optic) on a 727.

What aimpoints are kosher? 1000? 5000?

Aimpoint 3000 and 5000.  Maybe even a 2000, but i would say a 1000 is a little outdated.

I prefer the 5000 Magdot.  I've also been using a Redfield illuminator 3-9x40 (Denver made) with a "b" elevation knob, Accurange reticle and widefield ocular lens but that's just because it's cool.  I have no idea if anyone was putting them on A2s in the military but it works for me.  It's designed for a 200 yd zero and screams "Ar15."

Good post.  I always think of the A1 and A2 sights and eyeballs and a flashlight and maybe night sights.

You HAD to post that.......[Now, I go grumbling to myself to pull my TA01 off my SDMR build and move it to my A2 build, and then Get a "correct" TA01B for the SDMR]... ...[Grumble, Grumble]

I got an Aimpoint MkIII on evilbay yesterday for my early 90s carbine build.  I think they stopped making them in the late 80s.

We issued TA01NSNs and Comp M2 versions of the M68 with gooseneck mounts.  This was 2006 in the 25th CAB.

On my ca. 1989 Colt Gov't A2, I used a Beeman 1.5-4X compact scope and an A.R.M.S. Delta Elite mount.  Those scopes pop up on eBay frequently and are BRIGHT (the lens are made by Canon, IIRC).

Well, since you DIDN'T specify daylight optics.....

One other option that is never really mentioned but I knew guys that tried it was jerry rigging the optics from the SMAW rocket launcher onto the A2.  Not really authorized and I'm not sure how they mounted it (didn't do it myself) but I've seen it done a time or two before.

According to Trijicon's website, they came out with their 1.5x16 and 1.5x24 line in 1993.  The 1.5x24 TA45 has an NSN.  Were there any ever issued?  Is it too far-fetched to throw one on the 727 I'm building?
