The collars were terrible. It wasn't too hot that time of year, not that it mattered since we always had to wear it. Pic above was a touchdown spot somewhere off yonder obviously north of some FOB, I don't recall. Had been tasked to go do some quicky no-brain mission - take a squad to assist laying down an expedient helo pad. What that meant then was to pour thousands of gallons of diesel fuel into the sand in large square patches to effect a dust pallative.  Diesel in sufficient quantities solidifies into some solid in-depth "dirt." Lord please forgive us. Here's more of my A2, and like i said, the stock sticker stayed. The other week I asked a new intel analyst what he was doing in 1985 (when I went active). He replied he wasn't yet DNA. I guess we're getting to be "that old." Cheers to all those of Desert Storm; we're, too, moving along the sands of time. Just mixed up a shot of Southern Comfort, 1/2 shot vermouth, 1/2 shot of elderflower Liquor, 2 dashes orange bitters, topped with lemonade on ice - CHEERS to the Combat Engineers!

Depending on how close you want to get, the XM4 may be the easier option:

Since you put it that way, I’ll throw in pics of my FIRST BUILD!

I just did a A2 clone build.   It is just that.   Not exact though.   Was on a budget and used what parts I had and could get at a good price.
Already had lowers and lower parts kits.
But majority of the gun is DPMS.
Stock, barrel with FS, upper, rear sight, buffer tube. Went together smoothly.

Rock River lower parts kit, A2 flash hider and crush washer, gas tube, Delta ring kit

Spikes tactical lower, since it was the closest match in color to the DPMS upper.

PSA forward assist.

Think that's it.
Felt good to do this build.   Now to go find the time to test fire.

I do enjoy shooting irons.   Just daggone no line bifocals screw with me.

Guess u could say I am old school.   First issue rifle was a new Colt m16A2 in boot camp but got a A1 when I arrived at my unit.   WE also still had the ole 45 but soon transitioned to the M9.

Field upgrade... On the retro forum they make them all the time. It is a USGI bag strap that you cut the clips off of and use para cord to tie it up.

So this is my attempt at the 727....   Pretty much all correct except for the barrel of course, real 727 barrels are too hard to find and I would hate to shoot it.  This one is all Colt and gray.

How did you do that?  My A2 clone is the prettiest rifle of my bunch and I would like it to have a worn look to it like the rest of my milsurps.

And no, I'm not throwing it down a driveway

Thought I would post this oldy. 89 Fort Ord MOUT complex playing ,"Agressors",  An A2 with MILES gear.  It was some of the best training I received in the Corps.  We ran PT through the combat town even jumping building to building on roof tops and up/down/across ladders on roof tops and windows. At the time we were told it was the largest urban training complex.().

The upper is just good honest wear, it's been on bunch of different lowers over the years. The lower was basically new, it started out as a gray Mckay. What I did was take one of those foam sandpaper blocks and go at it. It came out looking just right. I reparked all the steel parts in zinc phosphate so they would be gray instead of black and then used the same sanding block on them. The furniture is just really worn G.I. stuff that I picked up over the years. The stock has a dog tag riveted into the side for a rack number, I always thought that was cool. Michael

Here's mine...

This was built for me by CMMG c.2008, back when their online order system allowed a high degree of customization and I deliberately rolled up an A2 clone.

The sling is the black version of the old school "M1" cotton loop sling that I understand the Marines to have issued during part of the A2 era.

I honestly can't remember why I put that "ranger band" on there.  I've never had any sort of accessory on it besides the sling...

Now, I've caught the camo paint bug, so can anybody direct me to a picture of a "real deal" A2 back in the day that was painted, or confirm from your own service in the era that you saw such a thing?

Looks good Barnacle Bill.  I never saw a painted weapon in the USMC 87-91.  I have only seen Army with Painted M4.
ETA: I have seen pictures of SAS with C7 painted.

LOL...  you could make the argument that you need to feel good by having them.  Otherwise you'll go nuts and nobody in your family can live with that.  How's that for logic?

I really am just kidding though.

Well in the beginning I imagined it as a place for guys to post pictures of their 700 series builds. It seems that not a lot of those builds are making it on here.

You mean like 727's?? I don't get the 700 series moniker.  I forget what mine is......  It's a Colt A2 20" Sporter Target.  Aaaaaahhh....  I'll look later.

Well, we could unofficially call this the real deal thread?  We don't get enough traffic in here for it to matter much how the threads are named.

Good question Mike.  A close-up of his day-pack has US marking on it and the baseball cap kind of give it away too.  I know the Iraqi's received a lot of surplus A2's, BDU's and other gears.  But I know they didn't get any A4's.  Also note the carry handle mounted on the KAC M5 forward of the EOTech.  I've never seen anyone mounted the carry handle this way before.

I never liked it but some guys would run their M16A4s like this. Or with the CH on the 6'oclock rail. Its kinda smart since we never had BUIS on any of our issued rifles.

Hey Weath, if you don't mind me asking, where did you get the FN A2 upper from? I like FN guns a lot. Nice looking guns by the way.

One of the members on here goes by Elohim1. He has been selling great FN uppers for the last couple of years for around $100 bucks give or take. I think he is also on gunbroker under that name.. Michael

Vintage of 2010,  Me in Camp Macgregor.  Lol.

It was a gorgeous FN A2 with rifle length KAC rails, and 3 shot burst.  It weighed roughly between 12 lbs and the moon.  Excuse the BFA.

I don't  know.  I worked with a guy once who claimed he drove a supply truck in the Gulf war and had an m16 without any ammo.  LOL.  I don't know if it was true or not, but....
