THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I am in Italy and I found someone who is going to sell this Colt Sporter Target 223" serial ST0263–– I phoned to Colt Customer Service and they told me the rifle came out of factory in 1992-1993 so that it should be a pre-ban. Can you please look at the pictures and confirm me if it is worth or not to buy it ? I know price in USA would much cheaper than in Italy, but any idea please ? Why the rifle has no bayonet lock under the delta ? Thank you. Here are some pixs

The lack of a Bayonet Lug pre-dates our Assault Weapons Bill by a few months....it may be that the lug was elimiated to meet export OR import controls of some countries. I am not sure, however.

Yep, I bought it yesterday.
You're perfectly right, it's a very nice rifle and quite rare in Italy. It was manufactured in 1992-1993 according to Colt Customer Service. It was imported to Italy in 1994. Only one owner who sold it to a dealer from which I bought it yesterday.
I replaced the 3 gas rings just in case ...

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
Can you show me a picture of the right side of your rifle with the dust cover closed???? I want to see the area around your magazine release and your front pivot pin. There may be the possibility of a really nice ( and every inexpensive ) modification to your rifle that you will really like. Congratulations on your new and beautiful Colt rifle. |

I really like the Italian proof marks on the lower receiver and barrel just in front of the sight tower. Is it me or the the trigger and hammer pins larger in diameter?

Like my rifle, you could add an original style front pushpin, detent and spring. Your rifle is drilled for it!!!! Right now, your rifle has a front pin that is held in with a screw, so if you want to take the upper receiver off of the rifle, you must unscrew the front pin. BUT if you buy a front detent pin, a detent spring and a military ( or "normal") AR-15 front push pin you can make your rifle take down like an industry standard AR-15/M16. |

I thought all Colt Model R6551 could accept a milspec front detent pin. Anyway I prefer to keep it original as it is for collection reasons. |

My truck rifle
There are three things about it that I don't like though. 1. No bayonet lug from the factory 2. Oversized pins in fire control group 3. Stupid sear block... Plus side: 1-7 govt barrel Pre Ban It's a factory colt Case deflector, I'm left handed and it comes in handy I love mine and I shoot it more than my sp-1's. Good score and love the Italian proof marks. Last rifle I had with Italian proof marks was an M-1 garand made by pb beretta. |

Just thought you might like to know just in case you wanted to change it. Have you shot it yet???? I generally prefer to keep firearms original as they came out of factory, especially this Colt which is really hard to find in Italy. I kept as it is also my other Colt rifle, a Match Target HBAR of 2000.
I made few changes like handguards, stock to my Bushmaster XM15E2S 16" and no mods to my Bushmaster XM15E2S Target 20" Just went yesterday to the range to test my Colt Sporter Target Model, I used S&B 55 Grs military surplus rounds. This is the result at 100 m. / 110 Yards

Very nice rifle! I had one like it back around 1990. The reason it has no bayonet lug is this. After the infamous Stockton schoolyard shooting in early 1989, Bush banned all foreign imports of so called semi-auto assault weapons. The original Colt Industries (which at that point firearms were only 5% of their business) went along with the idea and stopped production of the AR-15. When Colt Industries sold the firearms division to the group which reopened it as Colt's Mfg. Co., Colt brought out the AR-15 again, only without the bayonet lug so it wouldn't look so warlike or dangerous I think. This was before the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban.
