In 1988; 1st ID (FWD), 3-34 AR's M16A2 were black with the small-round assists. That includes the Hydramatic re-work we had.

In January of 1994, we had M16A2's at Fort Benning for OSUT, and they were FN, which surprised me as a gun guy.

When I got to my first unit in D.C, we had M16A1's, to include some XM16E1's and at least one weapon in my Company's armory that had a chrome bolt carrier.

We got A2's in fall of 1995, which was a sad day. I felt cheated after being used to the shorter, lightweight A1, with a better trigger.

Years later, the mortar Platoon Sergeant in my Company in 2nd Brigade of the 82nd said when he was with one of the Armored Divisions during Desert Storm, they still had M16A1's and 1911's, which they used to mercy kill many Iraqi's who had been blasted with WP rounds, and were slowly melting in their trenches or on their burning vehicles. He was in tears, relating the story on one of our last field problems before deploying for OIF1 in February of 2003.

I was in the 82nd, 2/505 Infantry from 1988-92, and we had drk grey colts. We used them everywhere from Africa, Asia, and South America and they ran awesome. The serial #'s were in the 30 thousands. The only FN's were the M249 like has already been said.

Of course the grammar nitpickers...

Böblingen is spelled Boeblingen when you can make umlauts.

Dated a German teacher, can't speak any more German now than when I was actually in Germany, but sure learned the spelling rules.

63Tango,

I was also with Stottman at Panzer Kaserne later after Bad Tolez was closed down. Your unit is long gone and 1/10th is there now.

Cool, I wondered if a U.S. unit occupied Panzer Kaserne after the 1st ID pulled out.

Well, I carried a 60 But the A2's where a mix of A1 over stamps, mix match Colt black upper and gray lowers or black lowers and gray uppers. But the brand new A2's (taken out of the wrap Aug 1990) where FN and PURPLE! Heck the only M16 30 rd magazines we had that worked 99.99% where FN brand new out of the plastic.

OK, the uppers where purple. No body wanted a purple rifle till they saw how they shot! Till this day I'll take a FN barrel over a Colt on a M16. My 2¢.

in the guard my unit got its first a2's in 2000 or so. Many were the older a1's rebuilt to a2's (had the word auto lined out and burst written over in electro pencil.) these included Colt's, Hydromatics and H&R's. Still remember my first a1 issued back in 1984- an H&R serial number 2216455. Prior to deploying to Afghanistan we got brand new m4's shipped directly from Colt- in the box was the rifle with the flip up matech rear sight, 7 mags and a sling. was also equipped with the knight's armament rail. when I deployed to Iraq (prior to the a-stan trip) my mtoe weapon was the m9, but was issued an m16A4 as well- FN.

Not knocking FN at all, I believe they and Colt are both top tier and I own rifles/parts from both, but aren't you comparing really well used and abused Colt gear to brand new out of the wrap FN items? You mention A1s that potentially could have been in service as far back as Vietnam ..

The 317th MP BN (USAR round out BN to 16th MP BDE) carried M-16A1s (Colt, H&R and Hyrdamatics) and 1911A1s (Colts, Remington Rands being the most common) during Desert Storm. They didn't transition over to A2s and M9s til at least 1994.

Prior to the start of the ground war they were at Raffa.

This is a pic of the M203 I had at Ft. Drum. Disregard the time stamp, it was the default time stamp on my camera back then. The actual date is approx. 91-92.

This world would be a better place to live if it weren't for people!

A1 over stamps! That means the lower was a M16A1 converted to a M16A2. The uppers where new. As I said my 2¢, FN makes a more accurate barrel, but I've only had 25 years of shooting Uncle Sugars stuff

While USAF SPs Ramtein AB West Gernany 1985-1987 I carried M16s No Forward Assists. Out GAUs were the same with two position alluminum stocks and a mistatch of barrell lengths. I saw my first M16A2 at Fort Benning during IOBC in October, 1992. A Ranger Tabbed SSG was throwing them into a pile on the armory floor to count them.
