Actually the SARP (Small Arms Replacement Project) started in about 1980.  I was at National Defence HQ in early 1981, and one of the key officers on the SARP was an old friend of mine (Lieutenant Colonel IPF (Ivor) MacLeod MM).  Ivor had been a sniper  with the British Army in Palestine and the Albanian communist incursion into Greece, before immigrating to Canada.  Being both keen shooters, we talked quite a bit about the project. At that point the project was in it's infancy, and they hadn't come close to deciding on a rifle design.

As I recall, issues of the C7 started on the west coast with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry out of Vancouver.  In  the Calgary-based units of 1st Canadian Brigade Group issues were delayed by production problems and we didn't get ours until almost 1987.  They were two-tone, having black lowers made by Diemaco and uppers anodized a grey-green and marked with the CH forge code. Of course they still had carrying handles and A1-style sights.  At the time I didn't know one port door from another, so I can't tell you whether they were A1 or A2 type.

A quick couple of questions regarding the C7s -

The C7 program started @ 1984 & the receivers at that time were anodized in a greyish color. At some point later, they started showing up with black anodized receivers (I think @ the time the C7a1 came out in 1990?). Does anyone know when this change-over took place?

And also - did the original C7s use the A2 port door? or were they the A1-style then? Does anyone know when they changed to using the A2 style port door?

I just bought one of the last (black type II anodized) DPMS C7 uppers (they apparently have now stopped production of these & sources are starting to dry up fast) & I'm looking to build a C7 clone, but I'm not sure on what all parts would be correct for a C7 that was built just before the C7a1 came out.

Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest the port door has always been the A2 style as it started to appear in the US by 1982 and I've seen mew A1s with the A2 port door. Thus, I would guess it unlikely that any production C7 had an A1 port door.

That looks sweet. The first C7s had shiny handguards and grip. I built mine on a Diemaco SA20 lower, so now I have a 100% Canadian built rifle.

Filled a spot in my collection with my C7 build. I had some "semi correct" C7 builds over the years, but they never quite were right...

This gun:

Picked up a factory Colt 715 upper off the EE (thank you SGL_Shooter) and traded some parts for a CS stock/Colt A2 grip. Had a 80% lower I engraved with my information and anodized in XM grey that matched up pretty nice to the light grey of the Colt upper. Finished it off with a Colt BCG and I am happy with my build. Only thing I am thinking aboot is having a 80% engraved with the correct markings and milling it out...

Rapidex wheel is not correct, but will stay for now...I kind of like it and living in CA no chance on a correct thermold magazine unless some kind soul will sell me one and block it to ten rounds..

Oh - I have some shiny A2 Colt handguards but never seen a shiny A2 grip. Guess I will have to switch out the handguards and keep an eye out for a shiny pistol grip

Wow Braceman that looks great!  You make me almost want to try again.  What is the length on your barrel?  Did you reprofile a barrel? Did you make the Simon Sleeve?  What do you think of the handling of the 16 inch HB carbine?
ETA;  Why does that FSB look different where it is pinned?

True SFW FSB clone!

How'd'ya do it?  Is it a modified existing part, or a full on custom fab job?

That’s an amazing clone build, especially knowing that you fabricated that simon sleeve, holy crap.

Been a while since I was last here, looks like Rebel Rouser already posted a pic of the new IUR, but in case you guys are interested in seeing more detailed pictures:

Here’s mine mounted to my LE6920:

Next to my SA20:

And what it would look like mounted to an SA20 lower:

Purdy!  I passed on this offering, but it was hard to resist the urge to buy the SA15.7 for the lower and an IUR to go with it to match my SA20.

Wow! I know I am VERY late to this party, but this is my favorite AR config.
At the risk of flogging a long dead horse, does the C-7 use an A-1 front sight or A-2?
I went with the A-1 style with my build, no deflector hump. Consistent with the early AR-15 A2 style.

Hi all, I recently got a hold of what I believe is an original C7 upper with C MP chrome bore .625 barrel, and A1 flash hider with original skinny tooled lock ring. I have since changed the tear drop assist to the round style which I believe is correct for this upper? I've added the green furniture on a A2 palmetto lower for now, anyone know if the CS green stocks show up anywhere special? For this period of rifle what is the correct A1 or A2 style lower? I plan in building and engraving quite a few 80% for my retros. Also having a difficult time coming up with the correct engraving for this lower. I think the early ones did not have the Dimeco logo on them but had the colt name engraved below the trigger pin correct?
Thanks for the help and guidance here fellas!
Jeff

Based on some research I did today I believe this is starting to look a little bit more like a Canadian rifle now with stuff I had sitting around

Then I started in my graphics program created the logos and laid out my 80% lower engraving now that I see how the lower is supposed to look. Cant wait to start milling!

Not even close to a "clone", more like "inspired by". I wanted a 20" but I wanted something a little different.

BCM upper, Stag lower, OD green furniture, slotted CAR lock plate, and a Daniel Defense A1.5 fixed sight to vaguely approximate the unobtanium Diemaco unit (and I wasn't going to spend a grand on an ELCAN). I ordered an OD green buttpad from two places, neither one has sent it or charged me, so these may be unobtanium now as well (I think they're Leapers/UTG, without the ordnance bomb and numbers as most CAR stock pads have).

I don't mind the Stag logo on the side. I think it looks kind of Canadian.

Im only a fan of the CAR stock on the XM177's otherwise they look dwarfed and are for me uncomfortable. I may even go back to my A2 OD stock...your inspiration needs a big ole optic to be true to the hozers though LOL

Agreed, it feels like shit on the shoulder. I'm hoping a buttpad helps it, otherwise I'll be shooting it with an M4 stock.

I should know better then to read through the Canadian threads you hosers!  Now I want a C7/C8, eh....

Also, now I have Bob and Doug Mackenzie stuck in my head.

Part of me is always looking 2 or 3 AR projects down the road.  The order of them always seems to change.  I wasn't going to do another A2 for awhile, but that FN A2 upper I just found didn't help me any.  In any case, I've been toying with the idea of a C7/C8 type for awhile.  If I go the route of a fixed carry handle upper, I think I know what I'm doing, and a C7 upper is easy enough to find (Bushmaster still makes them, not sure of who else might).  As for flat tops, that's where I have questions.

I made the mistake of looking at a photo of a C7A2.  Me likey!  Would something like this have the DIS handle available?  Does it have the Diemaco weaver rail on it for that matter?

On the upper. "R" on the lower means repetition fire, the lineage goes back to old British Army terminology.

Did some upgrades to my "close enough, eh" build so it's doesn't really belong in this thread anymore but I thought you guys might be interested. PseudoC7.

C79 switched to a SpecterOS4x
MilSpec trigger to a Geissele SD-E
Grips to MOE+
4Pos CAR to 6Pos ACS-L

I really liked the C79. It has great aesthetics but the OS4x is just such a better scope all around imo

Just FYSA -

As of Saturday, TargetMaster in Chadd's Ford, PA had a Diemaco A1 carry handle for sale with a stripped Colt flattop receiver for $100.

Not sure if they ship, but if anyone's looking for one and/or in the area, just a head's up if someone's looking for one.

Almost bought it myself, but they wouldn't separate it, and I don't have a Diemaco clone anywhere on the horizon, and didn't want to spend the cash on something I probably couldn't bring myself to part with once I had it.

With that being said, I'd rather it go to someone who wants one for what it is, than some bumpkin who buys it because it's cheaper than the A2 carry handles their selling (they want $200 for a standard Colt A2 carry handle ).

Only proviso is post pics if you get it.

DPMS is no longer making the C7 uppers, & thus CDNN will not be stocking them anymore...
