I recently got a new A2 stock..flat grey, am thinking to spray-paint it flat black. Will they hold a new color or should it be primed first? Sorry about the 'noob'-ness of the question

Embrace the gray, too many it is a sought after color. Try a little CLP on it if you want, it may (should) darken it up. But then again it would make it harder to get a good paint bond on the stock. I have never been able to grasp the notion of painting a gun myself, but if it makes you happy, good luck with it. It will cut thier resale value WAY down, probably about 50%, IF you can sell them at all after painting them....<><....:)

If you want an A2 stock in FDE, you will have to paint, which is just waaay too bad. I'll be doing this in a few weeks, as I need a stock to
match my Cav.arms rifle handies, and MIAD grip. |

I used matte black AlumaHyde II from Brownell's to paint this stock, no primer needed

For paint to stick, you will need a good amount of prep work.
1. Wash stock in hot water and soap. 2. Scuff with a red scotchbrite pad. 3. Rewash with hot water and soap 4. Wipe down with rubbing alcohol and a clean cotton rag 5. Krylon fusion for plastic works the best, but please shake the can for at least a min. |

have you tried dying it? I use liquid RIT dye. I dyed a FG CTR stock black, shot it while sweating and not have it come off on my cheek.
ETA: you have to do it on a stove or havr a constant heat source. I use a stainless steel pot on medium heat, dip for 10 seconds and repeat until the desired shade is found. MT_Guns did AUG stocks so he might have some advice on larger scale projects. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
