Re: Heartbreak Ridge
I know you posted this awhile back, but I just noticed the barrels this past weekend while watching it on TV.  Good catch!

That's what happens when you're a retro junky.

Slowly becoming the retro nerd.  But still have a ways to go.

I am not sure this is correct. I always thought it was the sights and upper that made it an A2. However, after seeing the pic thread on A2s right here on arfcom in the A2 forum, you'll notice on page 2 a Colt ad for the new A2 model. The things that make it an A2 are the handguards and the HBAR. The upper is all A1 style. Under that definition the guns in Heat would be in. I also saw on Youtube, hickok45's review of the A2, which he bought back in the 80s. He got all kinds of flack over it, because, that's what he had. An A1 upper with new round handguards and an HBAR. Everyone was saying it's an A1... but maybe it's not....

Notice the differences between the two rifles pictured below, and compare what you see to the rifle from Heat.

There's a little bit of weirdness in that brochure. The rifle they have pictured as a 711/715 is an M16A1 (notice the lightweight barrel profile and lack of brass deflector) with A2 handguards and an A2 pistol grip, but they're calling it an A2. I can't help but think that they meant to picture a C7 rifle (brass deflector, gov't profile barrel) instead. Afterall, the C7 is known as the Canadian equivalent of the M16A2.

Im starting to think Colt (and others) referred to A2s as having some combination of the new features, not necessarily ALL of them as most of us think and picture a "proper" A2 as having. Ive seen too many pics now with A1 sights and pencil barrels being labeled A2 models. Oh well... it's not like they're not cool too! And the shootout in Heat was awesome! So my vote says we count it...

I'm watching it right now, and I just noticed that in one scene, they all rode their charging handles home, and the rifles still chambered rounds with no issues. Doesn't happen like that in real life.

Gosh that was a good TV series. A beginning, a middle, and an end.

My next AR-15 is going to be an A2 HBAR, just so I can buy a M60 bipod and put it on the barrel.

S&W don't make an A2. An A2 has the carry handle and sights fixed, an integral part of the upper receiver. Yours most likely has the carry handle that detaches, leaving a flat-top picatinny railed upper receiver, no?

Has anyone said "Scarface"?

He ripped it up with an A2 at the end.

That was an M16A1 with an M203 mounted.

This is correct. The A2 designation refers to the style of the upper receiver. It has nothing to do with barrel diameter, handguards, barrel length, or stock type. Despite what some stupid advertising firm put in that Colt advertisement.

Im really not trying to be an ass, but this is just your opinion. There are real world photos/examples/rifles of Colt, Bushmaster and others where the receiver definition doesn't apply. Not even close. To argue otherwise only shows ignorance, not understanding, which was what many of us are saying. The A2 line definitely included some A1 receivers at one point in time. It wasn't marketing department trying to use up old parts.... it was the bean counters. Any A2 style component makes it an A2.

So I guess an M16A4 can be called an A2 as well since it has an A2 lower receiver, A2 stock, gov't profile barrel, etc.?

Survival of the dead.  The E-6 in charge had an A-2.  the other 3 squadmembers had A-4's.  Oh and they also fired aimed shots.  Something you dont see to often in zombie movies
